SMART Girls Program Gives Girls Ages 8-18 Confidence

This month in our Griset Clubhouse in Encinitas, teen SMART Girls mentored the younger girls creating a big-sister, little-sister chemistry. As pairs, the older group helped the younger ones find new, empowering words to describe themselves.

After the positive reflection exercise, the group separated to individually reflect and compose a poem, saying, drawing, or self-portrait.

Solana Beach Library volunteers read Dr. Seuss books to our La Colonia Club kids and taught coordinating craft projects.

STEM2Leaf Robotics workshops teach our Polster Club kids in Carmel Valley how to code, program robots, and create solutions.

Programming Robots To Move With STEM

This month our La Colonia Robotics Club members constructed attachments to give their robot newfound mobility. They created a claw that enables the robot to pick up and manipulate objects around the room with ease.

The robotics program run by STEM2Leaf Robotics has given students a valuable opportunity to learn about engineering and programming, all while having fun and working together as a team.

Latinx College & Career Expo

Our La Colonia Clubhouse partnered with the La Colonia Foundation for the 2023 Latinx College & Career Expo. About 60 middle and high school youth participated in the event, attending workshops and collecting resources on how to attend college.

Two motivational speakers were present, Dr. Xuan Santos, a professor at CalState San Marcos, and Gaby Beas, Mira Costa School Relations & Diversity Outreach Specialist. Both speakers shared their inspirational stories on how they overcame obstacles to get to where they are today, inspiring attendees to continue on their educational path.

Kyra Attends Youth of the Year State Competition

Our 2022 Youth of the Year Kyra Dominguez went to Sacramento to represent San Diego County in BGCA’s Youth of the Year State competition. It was two days of non-stop speeches, interviews, trainings and of course a tour of our state’s Capitol and meet-n-greets with CA state representatives. What an experience! We are very proud of Kyra!

"It’s important to me that all youth in our community have the opportunity from a young age to explore science and technology in a way that’s both engaging and empowering, beyond the classroom setting. I have found that STEM materials are often expensive and inaccessible to some in our community. That’s why I volunteer at BGC because it matters to me that our youth get exposed to key engineering and programming skills that will set them on the path where a career in science and technology can be a viable option."
