HEF Celebrates
NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH

Dear Mentors:

As we celebrate January as National Mentoring Month, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your dedication to service. We know first hand the impact that mentoring can have on a young person's life. The support that you provide your mentee(s) as a mentor is invaluable!

According to Mentor - The National Mentoring Partnership, young adults who were at risk of falling off track but had a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college and 78% more likely to volunteer in their community. What you do as a mentor is helping move the needle for college attainment for our students. As a consistent, positive role model for your mentee(s), you are helping them navigate life's challenges and promoting good decision making and life skills.

The TSIC Team could not do what we do without your support. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your passion and commitment to your mentee(s). Because of you, we are making post-secondary education a reality for the students in our program. Take Stock Scholars not only have an opportunity to pursue their education, but because of you, they will be equipped with the skills and support needed to guide them along the way.

From the TSIC Team, THANK YOU!

Anna Corman
Director of TSIC Program

The Mentoring Effect
We asked several of our students what having a mentor means to them. We have sprinkled their responses throughout the Newsletter. Read the first response below!

"Having a mentor means I have someone else in my corner besides my family. Bailey supports me through whatever I want to do. She has taught me how to get out there by volunteering and being more open to people.

Also, my mentor really encouraged me when I was getting bad grades, she told me, "Keep going, I know you can turn this around, keep pushing," and I did it! She always inspires me. My mentor's personality and wisdom are my favorite things about her. Sharon has a very beautiful soul and she never lets me down."

"M y mentor, Stacy, goes above and beyond. Having a mentor means having someone who I can talk to  about not only school related issues but also who I can share memories and thoughts with.  My mentor has made an impact in my life in several ways. W hen I was applying for a job she encouraged me to talk to the manager and communicate what I could offer to the job to make me stand out more.  She also guided me to start doing community service hours and she suggested different ways to get service hours without having to commute as much. The best thing about Stacy is that she is really easy to talk to and a fun person to be around!"

TSIC Visits the Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers generously supported Take Stock in Children scholarships for 10 students this year. In celebration of this, TSIC Scholars were invited to  meet several players, tour their practice facility and thank the Buccaneers personally for their support. We are so grateful for the Tampa Bay Bucs and the amazing work they are doing in the community!

"My mentor, Laura,  means so much to me! She just helps me be a better person. My mentor has impacted my life by helping me speak up more and just be more of a extrovert. The best thing about my men tor is  that she always m akes me laugh. She is so sweet and I' m so glad to have her in my life. My mentor also  encourages me. One time I had to present at school and I was very nervous. She told me that I'd do great and that the presentation I made was wonderful. I love her so much and I am so grateful to have her in my life!"
CONGRATUALTIONS, ANKIT!
TSIC Student earns a PERFECT Score on the PSAT

Hear what Ankit has to say about earning a 1520 on the PSAT:

"This achievement means a lot to me because it makes me feel gratified in that it shows how my hard
Ankit & proud Mentor, Mrs. Stephens
 work has paid off.

Also, it means quite a bit to my family, who has always pushed me to be the best that I can be. It feels great to know that I can accomplish something like this to show that their  encouragement has come a long way. I can't thank my parents enough for instilling the discipline in me that was necessary to accomplish such a feat.

This is something that is definitely going to change my future. It opens me up to scholarship and college opportunities, but more importantly, I think it helped prove to myself that anything within an academic scope is achievable as long as you put in the work. I think this level of self-confidence will go a long way as I continue my journey through education."

"Having a mentor means having someone- that really cares about me- to turn to for guidance during the difficult stages of life. The best thing about my mentor, Bailey, is her endless support and the advice that she gives me no matter the situation.  Bailey has pushed me to take care of  and pay attention to myself when I pile too much on my plate. Bailey's support was especially helpful towards the end of summer & beginning of the school year when life was really getting tough for me."

"Having Mike as a mentor is amazing! He is someone I can talk to about anything I need. He always tries to guide me in the right direction. The biggest impact Mike has made in my life is making sure I have everything I need to be the most successful student and person I can be. The best thing about Mike is that he cares about me- he always checks up on me and makes sure that I am okay and doing well.  Not only that, but Mike motivates me. When we talk about my future he says things that inspire me to do my best to be successful later in life."

The FAFSA Just Got Easier

This week, congress approved some long-awaited simplifications to the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid--widely known as FAFSA- making it easier for students and their families to qualify for grants and loans.

About 20 questions will be eliminated from the lengthy form because the IRS will not be allowed to share income information directly with the Department of Education. That means that students, or their parents, won't need to reference previous tax returns in order to fill out aid applications.

"To me, having a mentor means that I won't have to through things alone and I have always someone there to ask for advice. Laura has impacted my life by strongly encouraging me to go after things I have a genuine interest in. This ties into one of her best qualities - she's so supportive. There have been many things I was hesitant to pursue because of self-doubt but once Laura cleared my mind up, I went after them. A good example of this was when I was initially interested in the gap year program "Global Citizen Year".  I expressed that I
didn't want to do the application anymore because I didn't think I would be chosen, but with Laura's encouraging words, I did it. And thankfully I did, because after submitting my application, I was informed that I made it to the interviewing round. I completed my interview a few weeks ago and am now expecting to hear their response anytime this week. I would have definitely not gone after Global Citizen Year without Laura encouraging me to do so. I am so glad she is in my life!"

"Let me just start off by saying that having Chris as my mentor is like having a second father who supports  me both in good and bad moments- no matter the condition. The fact that my mentor accepted me as his mentee and genuinely wanted to get to know me, made a huge impact. He has done everything possible to help me with any frustrations I have had along my academic path as well. The best thing about my Mentor is that he is supportive of me and   he helps me  gain any information that I may need."
