Florence Falcons in the State Playoffs!

Thank you for your support of the Florence Falcons this season. The Falcons finished second in 7A Region 4 football and will now host Mt. Brook on Friday, November 8 at Braly Stadium.

Go Falcons!


Don't forget to keep your eyes  peeled  for the ladies in red tights in the community on Friday, November 1st . You can directly purchase apples from them, donate, or just chat about what Junior League is doing in your community. 

Plus, don't miss    Apple Annie Around Town the week of October 27-November 2. Visit participating restaurants in the Shoals area and enjoy a featured menu item. Look for the table tents that will have the special for that sponsor. When you grab food or drinks from spots in our area, you're helping us to serve the Shoals. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Junior League!


Florence/Lauderdale Tourism will host a free Halloween Trick or Treat on October 31 at 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Visitor Center located in McFarland Park.

This event is for people of ALL AGES. Come in your Halloween costume OR festive attire to receive candy and enter the Halloween COSTUME CONTEST.

The contest will be held online where Facebook users can vote on their favorite costume. There will be three prizes to give away for first, second and third place!

Space Tyger Album Release Show

Singin' River Live

Space Tyger is releasing the third album, "bittersweet", under Single Lock Records. We are having a release show Nov 2 where The Shoals area will be able to snag the album a week before it's official release! Joined by Florence's own resident dream pop pony Hayden Scott.





FORKS OF CYPRESS WALKING TOUR

Join us for the Forks of Cypress Plantation Site & Cemetery Historic Walking Tour 
The Forks of Cypress Plantation was one of the oldest antebellum mansions in Alabama. 
It was built in 1822 by James Jackson, one of the first settlers in Lauderdale County and a friend of Andrew Jackson. Bring your lawn chairs for the beginning portion of the tour. 

Directions to the site: take Cox Creek Parkway to Jackson Road (no traffic signal at the intersection) and turn right. At the dead end, turn right onto CR 41. Park along the road or enter the gate to park in the field leading to the columns





Fiddlers, Banjo Players and Strawbeaters:
Alabama's First Pop Musicians

November 10, 2019 @ 2PM
Florence Indian Mound Museum

Alabama Folklife Association director emeritus & fiddle enthusiast Joyce H. Cauthen will present "Fiddlers, Banjo Players and Strawbeaters: Alabama's First Pop Musicians," Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Florence Indian Mound Museum. Her presentation showcases the origins of Alabama's thriving music culture.
It is free admission. Make plans now to attend.



Amateur and professional photographer alike have an extra month to enter the  Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area's photo contest.

The contest calls for photos that celebrate the people and places of northwest Alabama. Both amateur and professional photographers are eligible to enter. Deadline is Friday, Nov. 15. Categories are architecture, downtowns, music, Native American heritage and nature/outdoor recreation, with separate divisions in each category for amateurs and professionals.

Entries must be digital, submitted by the person who took the photo and taken within Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone or Morgan counties. Required entry forms and other criteria are available here.

United Way of Northwest Alabama needs your donations!

United Way is partnering once again with the Homeless Care Council of Northwest Alabama and 2-1-1 Information & Referral to package homeless care kits, which will be distributed to the homeless in our community. PET LICENSING ORDINANCE
 

The City Council adopted a  pet licensing ordinance for certain dogs and cats. 
The ordinance became effective May 1, 2014.

CHAIR EXERCISE CLASS
 
We will help you with your activities of daily living.  

M-W-F  8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  
No age limit. No fees.

BEGINNING SQUARE DANCE CLASSES
with Singing River Squares

New Classes every 12 weeks!

Alabama's state dance is Folk and Square Dancing.  It's a healthy challenge that will have you stepping to the music and enjoying your new dance family. We welcome you to give it a try.  Singles, couples, families...anyone with the desire to learn is welcomed. The seasoned dancers will dance PLUS TIPS in between the beginners tips.

BINGO
This is offered at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There is no fee for BINGO. Expendable type prizes are appreciated such as paper products, toothpaste, mouthwash, lotion, soap, puzzle books, and unopened snack foods. If you'd like to make a donation to our guys and gals, they would greatly appreciate it.


GAMES
Rook, card games, board games, and dominoes are offered at The CLUB from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each morning and afternoon. There is no fee to play. Come enjoy some fun and fellowship with friends.

We attend
Senior Citizens Appreciation Day (SCAD)
each spring!

We have PICNICS at The CLUB throughout the year. Feel free to give us a call for the schedule. Due to thunderstorms that roll through our area, we have to postpone our outdoor events occasionally.
 
The DULCIMERS play each fourth Thursday at The CLUB, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Come and enjoy their music!
 
We especially like the  MYSTERY TRIPS and overnight trips with our friends from The CLUB.  The Dam Fall Color Tour and Touring for Christmas Lights are two of our favorite annual tours along with Reelfoot Lake, the Earthquake Lake, and Tiptonville, Tennessee, during bald eagle season.

  • IMPORTANT:  Please submit your information no later than Tuesday of each week (preferably sooner).  Submissions after the deadline will be added to the next week's publication.  The newsletter is posted on Thursday afternoon.
