It's In the FINE PRINT at Backus
The new exhibition of the 2022-23 season at the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery provides a unique view of A.E. Backus’s work. FINE PRINT: Rediscovering the Backus Portfolio on Paper and Canvas focuses on a very prominent limited-edition print portfolio titled “Florida and the West Indies – Sketches by A.E. Backus.” What makes this exhibition so special is that the original sketches have been paired with paintings from public and private collections that connect with the portfolio images. The exhibition will be on view from March 3 through April 30, 2023 at the Backus Museum located at 500 North Indian River Drive in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce.
|
The story of the prized limited-edition print portfolio “Florida and the West Indies – Sketches by A.E. Backus” is revisited in FINE PRINT for the 50th anniversary of its publication. These exceptional images were drawn from and inspired by the artist’s travels over nearly twenty years and gathered in 1972 as a high-quality portfolio. This assembly reveals Backus’ deep connection to the places and people he encountered. 16 of the original drawings are part of the Museum’s permanent collection, and are presented together for the first time since the limited-edition folio was published.
|
These singular drawings from the Backus Portfolio are displayed in conversation with colorful, rarely seen oil paintings that showcase the artist’s inspiration and creative process. The 40 works in the exhibition are grouped into the geographical subject categories of the original portfolio, with contextual information provided for each. Those categories include Florida; the Everglades; the Bahamas; Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic); and Jamaica. The collection of drawings and paintings breathe new life into the classic 18 prints known and cherished for generations.
| |
“Fifty years ago, there were originally 999 portfolio sets that were offered for $20 as an early fundraiser for the forerunner of today’s Backus Museum,” explains J. Marshall Adams, Executive Director. “Because the portfolio’s images were loose, people separated them over the years to frame individually or give as gifts. Today many people love the prints, routinely mistaking them for original sketches because of their high-quality production. But the memory of the original portfolio has dimmed a bit. It felt like it was time to bring them together once more and discover new and forgotten insights into the artist’s extraordinary and beloved work.”
|
The Members Opening Reception for FINE PRINT: Rediscovering the Backus Portfolio on Paper and Canvas is scheduled for Friday, March 17 from 6:00-8:00 pm, free of charge to Museum Members, not-yet members $20 (or join at the door and enjoy free access to all exhibitions and receptions for the year).
All dates and programming subject to change; please check the website for any updates or cancellations. We appreciate your understanding, your patience, and your support as we navigate the continuing pandemic challenges this season.

Alesandra Valenzuelas’ music is both deep and personal. Her catchy phrases will linger long into the night. She’s a little rhythm, a little jazz -flavored rock, and a lot of energy and soul.

The Clydesdales are Coming!
The beloved Budweiser Clydesdales of Super Bowl commercial fame will be in our neighborhood soon. See them in Vero Beach March 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. on a tour through town, beginning at Riverside Park, but if you want to see them getting "dressed" for the drive, catch the rigging process at 1:30.
March 5, they'll be at Rodger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter from noon to 2 p.m.
| From Anheuser-Busch, a History of the Budweiser Clydesdales: |
In April 1933, August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III surprised their father, August A. Busch, Sr., with the gift of a six-horse Clydesdale hitch to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition of beer.
Realizing the marketing potential of a horse-drawn beer wagon, the company also arranged to have a second six-horse Clydesdale hitch sent to New York to mark the event. The Clydesdales drew a crowd of thousands on their way to the Empire State Building. After a small ceremony, a case of Budweiser was presented to former Governor Alfred E. Smith in appreciation of his years of service in the fight against Prohibition.
This hitch continued on a tour of New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, thrilling thousands, before stopping in Washington, D.C., in April 1933 to reenact the delivery of one of the first cases of Budweiser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Shortly after the hitch was first introduced, the six-horse Clydesdale team increased to eight. On March 30, 1950, in commemoration of the opening of the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery, a Dalmatian was introduced as the Budweiser Clydesdales’ mascot. Now, a Dalmatian travels with each of the Clydesdale hitches.
|
DID YOU KNOW?
- Each of the Clydesdales’ handcrafted harnesses and collars weigh approximately 130 pounds.
- The Budweiser Clydesdales are given short names, such as Duke, Mark and Bud, to make it easier for the driver to give commands to the horses during a performance.
- Budweiser Clydesdales’ horseshoes measure more than 20 inches from end to end and weigh about 5 pounds.
- Dalmatians were known as coach dogs because they ran between the wheels of coaches or carriages and were companions to the horses. Since the 1950s, Dalmatians have traveled with the Budweiser Clydesdales hitch, perched atop the wagon proudly seated next to the driver.
- The turn-of-the-century beer wagons have been meticulously restored and are kept in excellent condition. The wagons are equipped with two braking systems: a hydraulic pedal device that slows the vehicle for turns and downhill descents, and a hand-brake that locks the rear wheels when the wagon is at a halt.
| |
Today, the Budweiser Clydesdales continue to be an enduring symbol of the brewer’s heritage, tradition and commitment to quality, making hundreds of appearances across the country each year.
To properly prepare the Clydesdales for their appearances, a team of dedicated handlers oversees their care. Expert groomers travel on the road with the hitch at least 10 months out of the year. Another team oversees their diet; each hitch horse will consume as much as 20 to 25 quarts of whole grains, minerals and vitamins, 50 to 60 pounds of hay, and up to 30 gallons of water on a warm day.
When it comes time to travel to an appearance, 10 horses; the famous red, white, and gold beer wagon; and other essential equipment are transported in three 50-foot tractor-trailers. Cameras mounted in the trailers are connected to monitors in the cabs that enable the drivers to keep a watchful eye on their precious cargo during transport. Air-cushioned suspension and thick rubber flooring in the trailers ease the rigors of traveling. The team stops each night at local stables so the “gentle giants” can rest.
The team also travels with hitch drivers, who endure a lengthy training process before they assume the prestigious role of a Budweiser Clydesdale Hitch Driver. Driving the combined 12 tons of wagon and horses requires expert skill and physical strength. The 40 pounds of lines held by the driver plus the tension of the horses pulling creates a weight of more than 75 pounds.
|
Presently, the Budweiser Clydesdales reside at the Anheuser-Busch breweries in St. Louis for public viewing. Visitors can also see the Clydesdales up-close at Warm Springs Ranch, the premier Budweiser Clydesdales breeding establishment in Boonville, Missouri. Both attractions are open seasonally.
When they’re not making appearances around the country, the Budweiser Clydesdales also continue to be marketing stalwarts for Anheuser-Busch. They first appeared in the Super Bowl in 1975, and have since appeared in countless Super Bowl commercials for the company.

“McKee Botanical Garden is proud to be a participating member of the March of Museums program again this year," Executive Director Christine Hobart said. "We hope visitors from all over Florida will enjoy celebrating the history, culture, art, and natural beauty that McKee Botanical Garden has to offer.”
Currently, the Garden is hosting Jason Gamrath’ s Garden of Glass exhibition featuring stunning glass sculptures of orchids, waterlilies and other plants throughout the Garden. Each sculpture is intended to accurately represent its living counterpart on a macro scale, bringing to light the beauty that exists within the micro scale of nature. These one-of-a-kind works convey the complexity of their living counterparts, engaging viewers in new ways of looking at nature through the fragility of glass art. The exhibition will be on display through April 30, 2023.

Janet Kipp Tribus has been painting and doing art for almost forty years. Her first foray was pen and ink house portraits in 1981. She studied at the Art Students League in NYC and was lucky to work with some very influential teachers. In 1984 she began painting in oils and eventually found herself wanting to express herself creatively in abstract shapes. She attended Oxbow, a summer residency program of the Art Institute of Chicago and it was there that she was inspired to pursue this new direction. Janet is a resident of Vero Beach, FL. Her colorful landscapes, abstracts, and red umbrella paintings, are collected far and wide

Okeechobee Music Festival This Weekend!
If you haven't already pitched your tent, this annual festival has a head start on you. The festivities began Thursday, but according to Katrina Elsken's article in the Lake Okeechobee News, many were expected to beat the traffic by arriving Wednesday, sleeping in their cars until the gates opened.
The festival goers have a notable effect on the community, emptying local store shelves to stock up for the weekend Elsken wrote: "They stop in Okeechobee to purchase what they need before they go to the festival grounds. For the 20-mile trip from the City of Okeechobee to the festival grounds in northeastern Okeechobee County, the vehicles will be crammed full with people and supplies. Some will tie things on the car’s roof. Okeechobee Music Festival is a camping festival. Once they enter the campgrounds, they stay for the whole weekend." A peek at the website suggests that the weekend is a little bit Key West festival, a little bit Woodstock, so be ready for anything.
Preparing for the festival is something like getting ready for a hurricane. Residents should be ready for lines at gas stations before as well as after the event, as revelers fill up for the trip home.
The festival isn't in the city of Okeechobee, but 20 miles north, in Sunshine Grove. Get all the information you need on the website, https://www.okeechobeefest.com.
