Tomorrow is Laker Day

As part of Laker Day, the College will host a free performance of Puerto Rican folkloric and Latin contemporary dance by the Borinquen Dance Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 17.  The event begins at 7 p.m. in the main campus auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Borinquen is the name the indigenous Taíno people used for the island now known as Puerto Rico. Part of the theatre’s mission is to offer a diverse range of youth, many from economically challenged families, the opportunity to develop and practice discipline in a rigorous dance program. Borinquen dance students finish high school at nearly twice the average graduation rate in the Rochester district.

Tomorrow's performance recognizes Hispanic heritage as part of the History, Culture and Diversity series organized by Robert Brown, professor of history. It will also be streamed on the FLCC YouTube account: youtube.com/flcc.

Please refer students to the Laker Day page of the website or the website events calendar for suggestions on how to make the most of their Laker Day.

Update your contact information

Why you should confirm or fix your phone number

The College will conduct a test of its emergency notification system on Thursday, Oct. 26, around 1:50 p.m.

All students and employees are encouraged to verify or update their telephone information before Oct. 25.

If you do not get a text during the emergency test and you have verified your records, you should contact Derrick Smith, assistant chief of campus police.

In the event of a snow day or an emergency, the College uses the FLCC Alert system to send emails and texts.

Texts will not go through if the College has the wrong phone number or if you inadvertently put your cell phone number in the "home phone" field in your records. "Home phone" is a reference to old-fashioned land-lines; the software does not send a text if a number is in the "home phone" field.

How to check your contact information:

  • Go to MyFLCC and log in
  • Click on your name in the upper right menu bar and then click "User Profile" in the drop-down menu
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and either confirm your number(s) is correct or use the pencil icon to edit the information.
  • If your cell phone is not listed, click the “Add New Phone” to add it.
  • It is very important to select the correct type of phone number in the drop down menu. If you enter a cell number, make sure the type field reads "cell phone."

The Employee Portal (EP) is live

The new Employee Portal is live, and the IT Division is looking for early adopters. New eForms, project sites and quick answers to questions are just a part of the new system. In time, the Employee Portal will replace the intranet, and no data will be lost. To take a peek, go to https://ep.flcc.edu. To see a more in-depth overview of the EP, or to move your department, group or team to the new EP, send the helpdesk an email to get started.

Campus Police officer among Law Enforcement Academy graduates

The Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy held graduation for the 2023 Basic School for Police Officers in the FLCC auditorium on Oct. 11. Over 400 people attended.

A total of 32 officers from the region were represented, along with dignitaries from their respective agencies. Training began at the main campus in March. (Learn more about the program here.)

Officer Matthew McDonald, shown in the photo at right with Police Chief Matthew McGrath and keynote speaker state Sen. Pamela A. Helming, graduated with the class. He has joined the Campus Police as the newest full-time peace officer and will be assigned to the afternoon shift. Matthew is a retired investigator from the Ontario County Sheriff's Office and brings over 20 years of law enforcement experience to the college.

Two criminal justice students, David Major and Nya Albanese, were ushers for the event, which was streamed live with over 260 views. Watch a recording of the event at this link.

Frequently recommended mindfulness resources

“Meditation is the only intentional, systematic human activity which at bottom is about not trying to improve yourself or get anywhere else, but simply to realize where you already are.”
