Mizzen offers a wealth of high-quality learning tools to the out-of-school time field. This week, we are focusing on one particular type of resource: plug-and-play playlists.

Unlike Mizzen modules—which are specific, scaffolded, and sequenced—playlists are all about flexibility. They feature activities created by various publishers for youth in multiple grade ranges. And, although playlists are organized around a general theme, activities can be mixed and matched—and delivered in any order you like!

Below, we will highlight playlists brought to us by four talented guest curators during this year’s Mizzen Summer Camp.

Strengthen Social and Emotional Learning with Johnny Crowder

Curated by Johnny Crowder, Founder & CEO of Cope Notes, this dynamic playlist features activities that teach mindfulness meditation, identifying strengths and talents, and cultivating compassion through service. Across the collection, you’ll find practical experiences, resources, and tips for empowering youth while helping them navigate stress and build healthy relationships.

Foster Health and Wellness with Richmond Brown

Curated by Richmond Brown, Jr., Associate Director of Programs with Woodcraft Rangers, this playlist embraces a whole-child perspective and celebrates the many everyday ways we can nourish youth health and wellness. Dive into the collection, and you’ll find blood-pumping relay races, team-building balloon tosses, and creativity-boosting game design!

Catalyze STEM Learning with Kayla Ambesi

Through this STEM-tastic playlist, youth will test a kite in flight (learning about wind and weight); make rock candy crystals (discovering supersaturation); record and sketch nature (learning about climate and weather); and more! It’s curated by Kayla Ambesi, Supervisor of Community Schools at Schenectady City School District, and a leader of district-wide STEAM Camps.

Amplify Youth Voice with Lauren B. González

This playlist, curated by Lauren B. González, is packed with engaging activities focused on the arts, career exploration, and social and emotional learning. You’ll find activities that foster self-awareness, creativity, connection, and belonging. Lauren has more than 15 years in the educational field and is a doctoral candidate for Applied Learning Sciences at the University of Miami.

2025 Drop Tower Challenge – Paddle Wheel

Audience: Teams of students in Grades 8-12

Proposal Deadline: Oct. 31

Contact: Ed-DropTower@lists.nasa.gov

Student teams are invited to design and build paddle wheels that will turn in water because of the wetting properties of their surfaces when they are exposed to microgravity. Paddle wheels from selected teams will be tested in the 2.2 Second Drop Tower at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Ohio. Top performing teams will have the opportunity to present their results in a student poster session at the 2025 meeting of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research.

Model the Distances between Planets in our Solar System

Did you know that the Voyager 2 spacecraft took 12 years to travel from Earth to Neptune, the furthest planet in the solar system? This sounds like a really long time! Maybe not that long if you consider what distance the spacecraft had to travel to get from Earth to Neptune. In this activity, you will make a model of the planets in the solar system and specifically model their distances to scale. Will it explain why the Voyager 2 took so long? Try it and see!
