New-Indy Containerboard Establishing Operations
Company investing $240 million in York County, SC

New-Indy Containerboard, a manufacturer and supplier of recycled containerboard for the corrugated box industry, today announced plans to establish operations in York County at a recently-acquired pulp and paper mill facility. The company is investing $240 million in the project.   New-Indy Containerboard uses 100% recycled fiber in its current manufacturing process. This acquisition will provide the ability to balance company product lines equally between virgin kraft and recycled containerboard.

"South Carolina has a robust recycling industry that continues to grow every day. We congratulate New-Indy Containerboard on keeping this trend going, and we look forward to watching the company succeed in York County for many years to come." -Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt

New Facility in  Westminster, SC

A joint venture is set to launch two U.S. processing plants in 2020, bringing new outlets for lower-grade materials. Investments in the projects will total at least $90 million.  PreZero Polymers will open a mixed rigids recycling facility in South Carolina and a film recycling plant in southern California. In the years after the facilities start up, PreZero anticipates expanding each so they are both processing mixed rigids and film.

The Westminster, S.C. plant will be an expansion to an existing ACI facility. The expansion will process an estimated 50 million pounds of mixed rigids per year. The project costs about $10 million.  Melton said the plant will be up and running during the second quarter of 2020.

The facility will shred, wash, sort and pelletize bales of Nos. 2-7 and 3-7 plastic bales generated by materials recovery facilities (MRFs).  "A lot of MRFs turned off their mixed rigids collection; we want to incentivize them and say, 'We're here for the long run and we want to be a reliable outlet for you,'" said Hendrik Dullinger, vice president of PreZero US.

What's Happened Since Last Year's EPA Recycling Summit?
Check Out This Webinar to Find Out!

The November 2018 Recycling Summit brought together leaders from industry and all levels of government to discuss opportunities to advance and strengthen the domestic recycling industry and markets.

Four action areas were identified to improve or advance a national approach to recycling: (1) education and outreach, (2) enhancing materials management infrastructure, (3) strengthening secondary materials markets, and (4) enhancing measurement.

This webinar provided an opportunity to hear from workgroup participants and leaders from the Southeast on each of the four action areas. In addition, questions asked during the webinar have been answered online. If you were unable to attend or asked a question, here's the link.

Member Spotlight: Republic's Evolving Sustainability Story
Exciting Goals for the Next Decade

When CRA's sponsors and members make the news, we like to spread the word.  With a large footprint and both a balance sheet and commitment level that run deep, Republic has made large strides, focusing especially on materials recovery, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and beneficial use of gas.  Republic processes roughly 6 million tons of recyclable material annually. It operates 75 renewable energy projects at landfills and is exploring new and emerging beneficial uses for landfill biogas.

Republic met all the goals in its first formal sustainability plan and has since developed a new plan, which stretches over 12 years and lays out some rather ambitious goals with a 2030 target.

Pete Keller explains that, " One sustainability goal is working toward a  circular economy  by increasing recovery of recyclables by 40 percent. That includes blue bin materials like cardboard, plastics and metals, as well as organics, biogas and oil. We are leveraging technology to work toward this goal. Investments in technology and processing equipment enable us to produce at a higher quality and process more tons, all at less cost."
Congressional Plastics Solutions Task Force
A Move Toward a More Sustainable Future

Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) has launched the Congressional Plastics Solutions Task Force, a coalition of lawmakers working together with state and local officials and industry representatives to facilitate investment in recycling technologies and promote education on plastics generation and recovery.

The Congressional Plastics Solutions Task Force will convene periodic meetings to:
  • Highlight changes and innovations in the private sector;
  • Increase understanding of the challenges facing our domestic recycling infrastructure;
  • Identify and discuss innovative approaches to plastics generation and recovery, as well as the latest research on those topics;
  • Build consensus among Members of Congress around opportunities to address plastic waste
