JANUARY 2026 —

Welcome to 2026…a New Year with new potential! January is a time to review accomplishments and challenges faced in 2025 as we look forward to opening new doors to opportunities for the new season. Our goal is to meet and exceed service to current clients and seek out new opportunities with potential future customers.

Planning and preparation are important areas to review the scope of work with current clients and internal business operations. Establishing a confirmed agenda begins the scheduling process and anticipates the time and support needed to accomplish completion and potential for new additional projects. The pursuit of new projects also provides the opportunity to meet new customers and possibilities.

We are upgrading to new landscape software to go paperless for 2026. Another addition will be 2 new enclosed trailers for better efficiency and time management.

This season is a time to plant new seeds of growth – both in the ground and within efforts to expand and excel in new possibilities in 2026! See you the start line!

Welcome Aboard!!

Jose Estrada is our newest addition to the Hewson team as Landscape Superintendent of Operations. His previous experiences were with Dubrow's nursery, High Tech Landscape, and Limbach's Landscaping, encompassing a thirty year run. Jose is well versed in best practices for the horticultural industry: proper pruning, selection of plant materials, hardscape installation, irrigation, turf and shrub bed control along with execution of maintenance and installation jobs from start to finish. The skill set he brings with him as a previous project manager will enable the company to grow and reach higher heights. We have already hit the ground running with Jose for the 2026 season. Looking forward to a great 2026!

Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

At Hewson Landscape Inc., we deeply value the safety and well-being of our clients, and we believe that creating secure and sustainable environments goes hand in hand with protecting our family and employees from hidden dangers like carbon monoxide poisoning. This invisible threat can lurk in our homes and workplaces, making it vital for all of us to take proactive steps to prevent exposure. Simple yet effective measures like ensuring proper ventilation, regularly checking gas appliances, and installing carbon monoxide detectors can make a world of difference. Familiar symptoms with CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting and confusion. By embracing these practices, you not only safeguard everyone but also enhance the functionality and safety of your outdoor spaces, which we proudly help you design and maintain. Let’s work together to create not just beautiful landscapes, but also safe havens for everyone. If you have questions or need assistance in ensuring your environment is as safe as it is stunning, don’t hesitate to reach out to our knowledgeable team at Hewson Landscape Inc. – we’re here to help you every step of the way!

Benefits of Winter Pruning

Proper pruning for shrubs in New Jersey during January is essential for fostering healthy growth and enhancing the overall aesthetics of your outdoor spaces.

  • Reduced Stress & Better Healing: Dormant plants recover faster with minimal disease risk.
  • Clear View: No leaves means you can see the plant's architecture and make better cuts.
  • Stimulates Growth: Encourages strong new growth in spring and better fruit/flower production.
  • Disease Prevention: Helps prevent pests and diseases by removing crossing/rubbing branches and improving air circulation.
  • What to Prune (Deciduous)
  • Trees: Oaks, Maples, Elms, Crabapples, Ash, Birch, Linden, etc.
  • Shrubs: For structure and size control (Cotinus, Berberis, Flowering Currants).
  • Perennials/Grasses: Cut back ornamental grasses and perennials.
  • What to Avoid Pruning in Winter
  • Evergreens: Prune in spring or midsummer, as winter cuts can cause sap bleed and slow recovery.
  • Spring-Flowering Shrubs: Pruning now removes next spring's flowers (e.g., Forsythia, Lilac, Azaleas).
  • Key Tips
  • Check the Weather: Only prune on days above freezing; delay if a hard freeze is coming.
  • Start with the "3 Ds": Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches first.
  • Clean Up: Remove water sprouts (upward-growing shoots) and suckers (shoots from the base).
  • Look for Structure: Address crossing branches and weak leaders.
