Shvues (Shavuot) celebrates the giving of the  Toyreh (Torah). This year, the holiday begins the evening of Saturday, June 8. Customs include staying up all night to learn, and eating milkhiks (dairy) such as cheese blintzes, kugel, ice cream, pizza, and cheesecake. Come to the East Bay's Tikn Leyl Shvues to sing Yiddish songs! See details below.

SAVE THE DATE for our Kumzits !   The first KlezCalifornia Kumzits will be Sunday, July 14, 2-4pm, in Berkeley, and it's free! Literally meaning "come sit," a kumzits is a fun, participatory event for all ages where every person does something for 2-5 minutes: tells a Jewish joke or story, sings (or leads) a Yiddish song, plays a klezmer or Yiddish tune, recites a Yiddish poem, etc. We'll go around several times. Everyone participates! RSVP to be sent the address!

Obereks, Mazurkas, and Polkas, Oh My!

with Cookie Segelstein and special guest co-teacher Stefan Puchalski (from Poland)
Sunday, June 23, 3:30-6:30pm, Kehilla Community Synagogue, 1300 Grand Ave., Piedmont

Klezmer music has elements of many national and regional styles and klezmer musicians had to be able to play in the styles of their customers, both Jewish and non-Jewish. We will examine some Polish folk tunes and compare Jewish and Polish styles of playing them. Stefan was one of the sources for Veretski Pass' project, "Poyln: A Gilgul."

The workshop is suitable for instrumentalists intermediate and above on all acoustic instruments. Registration is $25 (sliding scale - pay what you can) in cash or check at the door. Listeners welcome; donation requested. Light snacks provided. Bring a recording device or a music stand if you want. Brass players should bring a mute.

Please RSVP with name, instrument, and any questions, or just show up!

Honor Wall
Harvey Leonard Gotliffe:
To honor those who have taught me so much about life, in and out of classrooms, and are no longer around to offer me more of an education. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to share time, thoughts, and love with each of them: Misha Caspi, Gordon Greb, Michael Ego, Jimi Yamaichi, Great Uncle Samuel Goldsmith, Chayale Ash, Leonard Salle, Chungliang Al Huang, Jack Fields, Robert Dale Johnson, Roger Tatarian, Wallace Sheldon Shanbrom, Edith Tarjan, and my dear parents Hilda and Henry Gotliffe.
