Didi Emmons at Boston Local Food Festival
Didi Emmons congratulates the winner of the Seafood Throwdown at the Boston Local Food Festival last October.

Didi Emmons, chef/author of the best-selling and James Beard nominated Vegetarian Planet and the newly released seasonal cookbook Wild Flavors, will be conducting a tasting, signing and demo on winter slaws using local produce and foraged food, including juniper berries from 10 - 1.

Didi was trained in France and is the founder of four Boston area restaurants, including Haley House and Veggie Planet. Haley House is a non-profit in Dudley Square, Roxbury that offers healthy affordable food and trains people in food skills transitioning from incarceration and homelessness.   Didi is also Executive Chef of Take Back the Kitchen, an after-school cooking program for youth in Roxbury and Dorchester.

Kitchen gardeners or mad-eyed gleaners will be itching to get dirt under their nails after reading this book. Bookshelves groan under the weight of new seasonal-produce cookbooks, but none of them conveys the unglamorous work of farming so realistically or lovingly."

Deborah Taylor of Deborah's Kitchen
Deborah Taylor of Deborah's Kitchen.

Deborah Taylor, jam maker, from Deborah's Kitchen, Inc has commercially made low sugar spreadable fruit and relish for the last nine years by using 70% fruit for full fruit taste. Most jams on the market are 62%  - or more - sugar.

Deborah loves to spread the word of using less sugar. Join her in a Jam Making Demo at Russell Garden Center between 11 - 12, and learn how to preserve the full fruit taste and consume less sugar and calories, in all your preserves, spreads, jams and jellies. This event is for children and adults. Spread less sugar and spread the joy of healthier eating!

Dale Wentworth
Dale Wentworth of The Warren Farm and Sugarhouse will be on the farm in North Brookfield this Saturday boiling syrup.  His wife, Janice, will be at the market this Saturday for the last time this season with maple syrup and other maple products including: rubs, mustard, marinades nuts, jam and sauces.
We are delighted to have writer, cook and dedicated local food promoter, Robin Cohen of Doves and Figs with us at the Wayland Winter Market for the very first time.  Her creativity in combining ingredients is renown.

"We are bringing delicious jams, conserves, and fruit mustards.  I will have some special flavors made with Taza Chocolate such as Cape Escape (cranberry & chocolate) jam, and apple raspberry hard cider mustard made with Harpoon hard cider.  All of our native fresh fruit is grown in Massachusetts and our dried fruit, citrus, and nuts are USA-grown. We will also bring crunchy Mandelbrot cookies-a twice baked cookie (like biscotti) made with farm eggs, King Arthur flour and a variety of Taza chocolate, dried fruits & nuts," reports Robin.

Speaking of babies, thanks go to Bill and Sharon Kerns of WindSong Farms for bringing their Tunis Lambs to share with adoring fans of all ages.  Several Farm Fiber Day vendors had animals that were born in the middle
of the night before they came.  Jeff And Robin Meek of Bally Duff Farm decided to name their twins Wayland and Russell!

Karen Pettinelli
Karen Pettinelli of Terrosa Farm in Barre, wraps up her winter season this week.  We look forward to seeing some of her summer crops at our Summer Market, which starts in June.

Natick Community Organic Farm joins us to share information about their farm and the programs that they offer year round.

They will be doing us a big favor by bringing salad greens.  We

always sell out well before the market is over, so we are grateful for their generosity.  Look, also, for yarn made from their own sheep.
