Chef Domenico Lands In Pittsburgh Bringing Authentic Italian Food With Him
On the week of June 18th, Market Square will welcome a new chef. His name is Domenico Cornacchia, a chef based out of the Washington D.C. area. Molinaro Ristorante is his first introduction to the city of Pittsburgh.
Chef Domenico grew up in the Abruzzo region of Italy, where he went to culinary school. From there he traveled onto different European countries, like France, Belgium, Luxembourg, to work after graduating. Eventually he found himself coming to the United States in 2009 where he worked in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. There he moved onto DC where he worked at Cafe Milano for 16 years. He then opened up a project called Assaggi in McLean, VA, where he created authentic Italian dishes.
After meeting Ron Molinaro a few times, both Ron and Domenico decided to open Molinaro Ristorante. Here in Pittsburgh, Domenico arrived to open Molinaro Ristorante with business partners Ron Molinaro and Bobby Wolfinger. This restaurant will feature cuisine specifically from the Campania region of Italy, off the Almafi coast. This region is widely known for their pescitarian dishes from the Medditeranean sea. The creation of buffalo mozzarella comes from the Campania region as well, and will feature popular wines such as fiano and aglianico. With the region having mountains so close, they restaurant will also have different types of meat on the menu.

Three Rivers Arts Festival Coming Up This Friday!

Red Beards Knocks It Out of the Park On 6th
Red Beards- where everyone knows your name. Just like the iconic bar in the late 80's sitcom Cheers, this is the atmosphere that Red Beards owner Lenny Semplice aims to achieve in both locations of his sports bar restaurant. Decorated with oil canvas paintings, all done by a local artist, featuring iconic names in Pittsburgh sports, the minute you walk into the Downtown Red Beards, you know you are in a true upscale sports bar.
Red Beards started out on Mt. Washington 24 years ago on Shallow Street. Six years ago, Semplice decided to branch out and expand the brand and he knew Downtown was just the place to do it. He chose 6th street because that was his favorite block with so much going on. He grew up in the Brookline area and lived in Downtown for 12 years and noticed the growth in Downtown with more and more people working and living in the area. He also noticed that despite being right across the river from PNC park and Heinz field and right around the corner from now PPG Paint arena, that Downtown did not have a true Sports bar. He himself was a true sports fan, having coached hockey in Europe, Canada and several local high school teams.
What Mr. Semplice takes most pride in his businesses is the reputation, his name and the amount of detail he puts into making Red Beards a quality dining experience. "If I notice a spot on the wall, I will be there in a minute with a toothbrush scrubbing it out. My places are spotless. I want to ensure a clean space with fine quality food."
He also focuses on consistency between the two stores, something that was a bit of a challenge when they first opened the Downtown location and still is because the menu is constantly changing, new items being added twice a year.
What a lot of people may not realize about a sports bar is that business is pretty dependant on what kind of season the local teams are having. "I noticed a small drop in business when the Pens got cut from the playoffs this year. Even when the teams are away, locals want to be out with their friends watching the game. Now the Bucs are doing well so we get people a lot crossing over the bridge after or before a Pirates game." Mr. Semplice himself has season tickets to Steelers, Penguins and Pirates.

Crown Castle is Bringing 5G Technology to Downtown
Crown Castle is a Pittsburgh based company that owns and operates the infrastructure behind technologies that structure of our everyday lives. With an ever increasing need for speed and data, Crown Castle looks to fill those needs while also embedding themselves into the communities in which they operate. Crown Castle became interested in the Downtown area upon recognizing the forward thinking advancements Downtown has made, including ride sharing and a holistic approach to living and working in Downtown.
Crown Castle recently became a member of the Downtown CDC in an effort to "become more interwoven into the Downtown community." Renee Morales, Public Affairs Manager of Crown Castle's Central Region says that "with the advent of small cell infrastructure like 5G technology", as opposed to 4G which is what our cell phones currently operate on, "the development of the 5G technology will help to change the digital landscape of Downtown Pittsburgh," something Crown Castle is excited to work with Downtown CDC on.
Crown Castle believes that with the right infrastructure and technology, the possibilities for advancement are limitless. This includes economic changes that would benefit the cultural business district.
Crown Castle and the Downtown CDC have also partnered together for the Pennsylvania Partnership for 5G- an initiative that will educate chosen areas about 5G technology and help improve the way we communicate and do business. For more information on this initiative, visit their website.

Designer Spotlight: Bernice Yu
Bernice Yu
is a 21 year old rising senior at Carnegie Mellon University. She has lived in the suburbs of Pittsburgh her whole life which makes being selected to be a part of the 2018 Pittsburgh Fashion Week an even more special honor. At CMU, Bernice studies writing and communication design which is more graphics based than fashion but she has always been interested in style and design, creating her own jewelry in high school. About a year ago, she started designing clothing.
Since she is relatively new to the world of fashion design, Bernice's current goals are to expand her skill set and to have more tools she can utilize to express herself, something she hopes to achieve at her fashion design internship in San Francisco this summer.
What Bernice likes most about fashion is that it is a valuable form of expression. "To be able to make something that can be worn on your body is something that is unique to the art of fashion design that other mediums don't have. Fashion has the ability to marry the concepts of art and the person wearing them."
For this year's Pittsburgh
Fashion Week, she is planning on doing "a menswear line that plays with the hardness and softness between masculinity and femininity as well as playing with the acts of decorating ones body and using ornaments on the body to decorate and express." She wants the line to be very ornate and avant garde, focusing on contrasts like hard soft, opaque and transparent.
Currently, Bernice is in the process of sketching out her ideas and hopes to begin the process of sewing and creating her designs next month.
