- Chenin Blanc -
This week we explore a great chameleon of the wine world, Chenin Blanc. Much like Riesling, this grape has high acidity and can be deliciously balanced in styles ranging from bone dry & lean to lusciously sweet. Moreover, this grape grows well in a wide variety of soils, and can be delicious produced in stainless steel or oak barrel. And of course, you can make insanely delicious sparkling wines from Chenin Blanc — with delicious roundness and notes of honey. Crémant de Loire makes a world class Brunch Bubble option, but don't tell Prosecco we told you!

ANNOUNCEMENT: We've extended our Wine Sale!!!
We decided today was too soon to end a good thing, so our wine sale has been extended through Sunday, September 17th.

Chenin Blanc
The origins of this delicious grape are planted in France's Loire Valley, likely first in Anjou back in the 9th century. From there, the grape traveled into the Touraine where it was planted at a site that earned its namesake, Mont Chenin. Dutch navigator Jan Van Riebeeck brought cuttings of Chenin Blanc to South Africa in 1655, beginning this varietals expansion into the "New World". Today, you will find delicious Chenin Blancs also grown in America, Australia, Chile, and Argentina. Terroir has a profound influence on the flavor profile of Chenin Blanc, but some usual aromatic and flavor notes include honeysuckle, apple, ginger, and jasmine.
Loire Valley, France
Vouvray is a versatile region, producing dry, off dry, sweet, and sparkling styles of Chenin. Vouvray's neighbor Montlouis-sur-Loir produces a similar range of wines often at a greater value because of their relative obscurity. Savennières, in Anjou-Saumur, produces breathtaking Chenin Blanc that is powerful, dry, and ageworthy. Anjou produces the iconic dessert wine Quarts de Chaume, a Grand Cru appellation producing sweet wines made via botrytis or "noble rot". One of our favorite Chenin Blancs is undoubtedly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, which is a Monopole AOC (a wine region controlled by a single winery). Coulée de Serrant is considered one of the greatest dry white wines of France, coming from a small 7 hectares that have remained under vine since 1130! And when it comes to Crémant, we just can't get enough of Vignoble Brisebarre Vouvray Brut. This wine is made by Philippe Brisebarre using "Agriculture Raisonée" (low-impact farming practices) and has a soft and creamy texture with notes of honey, nuts, and spice.
South Africa
South Africa is considered the second home of Chenin Blanc. With nearly 400 years of history, South Africa produces some of the New World's most compelling Chenin, or "Steen" as it is regionally called. A lot of the Steen grown in South Africa goes into the production of Brandy. High quality, dry white wines are produced in the regions of Stellenbosch, Swartland, and the Coastal Region. One of our absolute favorite Steen's is the Kumusha Chenin Blanc, made in the dry-farmed vineyards of Breedekloof Valley by winemaker Tinashe Nyumudoka. Tinashe is a Zimbabwe native who moved to South Africa for better economic prospects. He went from server, to Sommelier, to winemaker! Eben Sadie's Skurfberg Chenin Blanc is one of the most exciting wines coming out of South Africa. This single block Chenin is mineral driven, with notes of beeswax, citrus and pine. The wine is aged in large wooden foudres, and the mouthfeel is rich, grippy, and textured.
America
Delectable domestic Chenin Blancs can be found if you know the right places to look! The relative rarity comes, of course, from Chardonnay commanding much higher prices. We always keep a collection of tasty American Chenin Blanc in our shop because we're proud of what our country can do with this great grape! Clarksburg and Central Valley are where you'll most commonly find domestic Chenin Blanc produced in California, but you'll find it scattered throughout the state — as well as in Oregon and Washington. Three by Wade Chenin Blanc is a textural delight with notes of zesty lemon and tropical fruits. This winery is owned by Dwayne Wade, an NBA star and lover of Napa Valley wines. Ltd+ Chenin Blanc is one of our favorite Oregon selections, a low intervention wine made by Chad & Bree of Constant Crush. This wine is grown on ancient seafloor sedimentary soils cooled by winds of the Van Duzer Corridor.
Cocktail of the Week: Skol Aquavit Martini
It is Viking Season, so let's try a Nordic spirit! This is a spin on a classic negroni but using aquavit instead of gin. I also played around with the proportions of each to make it a more balanced cocktail. Bareksten Norwegian Aquavit is a very light and botanical aquavit which is why I used more of that than the other ingredients. This Aquavit is also delicious on its own over ice with a lemon twist. This is the perfect cocktail to have while the Vikings are playing — even if they are losing, at least the cocktail is a touchdown!
1.5oz Bareksten Norwegian Aquavit
1oz Oscar 697 Rosso Vermouth
.75oz Bizzarro Aperitivo
1 dash Bittercube Orange Bitters

Add all ingredients into a mixing glass, add ice, stir it up, strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange peel.
GO Vikings!
Cheers,
Nikola

Staff Picks - What to Drink this Week
Try these special, staff-selected libations!

2022 Franz Gojer Vernatsch Alte Reben - $24.99
Another hidden gem of the Alto Adige, and one of my favorite obscure red grapes is Schiava, or Vernatsch as it is known in the local dialect. Perfect for this almost Fall weather, Schiava is light on its feet and easy to drink, especially with a slight chill, and the Gojer family are the masters of this charming grape. Grown 600 meters above sea level, this 'Alta Reben' or old vine Vernatsch is pomegranate and rose petals and herbs in the glass and light and bright on the palate. It's the perfect accompaniment to pork dishes and salumi.

2022 Tenuta Roveglia 'Limne' Lugana - $22.99
On the south end of Lake Garda, just west of the romantic city of Verona, lie the vineyards of Lugana. This DOC wine region is devoted to one varietal, the Turbiana grape. Once thought to be a clone of the journeyman Trebbiano grape, it has recently been shown to be more closely related to the more expressive Verdicchio grape of Italy's Marche. I also like to think of this lush wine as a great alternative to Chenin Blanc.
If you enjoy french Vouvray but are wishing to expand your choices of something similar, this is a great place to start. Fragrant aromas of peach blossom and wild flowers lead to a creamy savory palate of ripe peach, quince, and yellow pear, with a nutty touch and bright acidity holding it all together. This wine will be well matched with Fettuccine Alfredo and sauteed chicken breast.
Salute!

2022 Quinta do Regueiro 'Secreto' Alvarinho Reserva - $21.99
This Alvarinho hails from the Vinho Verde region in Northern Portugal. It is a still wine and has more dimension and depth than I am accustomed to with the Portuguese varietal, making it a great buy at the price point. The wine exhibits the great racing acidity that is a cornerstone of the Alvarinho grape, but it is balanced by the richness that is achieved by extended lees contact. The nose shows lively notes of pear and apple and the medium bodied palate delivers creamy lime fruit with mineral and honey. This wine is a brilliant aperitif but would shine with shellfish or fish tacos.

2021 Idlewild Flora and Fauna White Blend - $26.99
Idlewild wines were created with a passion for the wines of Piedmont. That said Flora and Fauna uses Piemontese grapes to create something unique. The blend perfectly balances aromatic and mineral components in a seamless and satisfying way, a feat often attempted but rarely executed. The result is aromatic and rich up front but immediately gives way to a tense, concentrated core and a long saline finish. Perfect winter white, probably goes with anything
