Our Thanks to Andrea and Tony

for their many years of support!

Andrea and Tony Bryant

–Interview by Rosanne McGuire

Andrea and Tony Bryant met on a cross-Atlantic cruise ship in the 1950’s. This was long before search engines—and Tony knowing the young California woman’s hometown, tracked down her contact information through phone books at a Chicago library. The two reconnected under the watchful eyes of Andrea’s family and they were married in 1960, honeymooning like pioneers in a family cabin in Mount Lassen National Park.

This storybook relationship has lasted for decades and so has their commitment to community. The Bryant’s have contributed to countless non-profits in the area, and beyond, including Old World Foundation.

“It’s important to examine the past as we look into the future,” says Andrea Bryant. “The way to do so is to show children and families what life was like before they were born. This living history at Old World Wisconsin is the perfect way to learn.”

The two are very intrigued by the Pleasant Ridge story. The area at Old World Wisconsin depicts the integrated community that survived in the driftless area of Wisconsin from the mid 1800’s until the 1920’s.

The Bryant family's company Century Companies (now run by a grandson) is celebrating its 108th year – so their long-standing commitment to Southeast Wisconsin is historic in its own right. Andrea says most of their donations go to foundations – like Old World Foundation.

In this season of thanks, we want to thank all our Friends for being a vital part of our community. In October, we were fortunate to welcome several teams from our corporate partners to Old World Wisconsin to volunteer for Halloween Legends and Lore.

Milwaukee Tool – Mukwonago

Our thanks to Milwaukee Tool – Mukwonago for working alongside the awesome garden volunteers to carve more than 100 pumpkins for the event.

Generac in Eagle

We also want to thank the teams at Generac in Eagle who helped carve pumpkins and helped park cars during the event.

Ode to the OWW Animals!!

By now you probably know that you can sponsor an animal at Old World Wisconsin. Conserving the heritage breeds is important to OWW and providing state of the art care is costly. We are thankful for all our Friends who provide financial support by sponsoring the animals.

The Benefits of Sponsoring...

If you sponsor at $1,000 or more, you and three of your friends are invited to an exclusive behind the scenes tour to meet several of the animals at Old World Wisconsin. In October, we hosted the Sapienza-Johnson family. As you can see, they had a great time learning about the animals from OWW’s Animal Programs Coordination, Kylie.

You can have an exclusive animal meet and greet too!

Visit our website for more information about sponsoring an animal.

An Animal Sponsorship Makes a Great Gift Too!

Jimmy The Blacksmith –

By Michael Paddock, Old World Wisconsin Facilitator

He walked into the 1880s Blacksmith shop with purpose and a smiling mother in tow.

“How old are you, young fella?,” I asked as I stoked my coal forge to make the steel red hot.

“My name is Jimmy, and I am eight and a half years old,” he proudly relied.

As he helped operate the crank blower to stoke the fire, I explained that in the 1880s he would have needed to wait two years to be a blacksmith apprentice. He sat down and quickly got out his notepad to take notes.

We went through the progression of a blacksmith in the 1880s through the life story of Henry Grotelueschen who had built the shop in Waubeka, Wisconsin. Henry had come to Wisconsin from Germany as a young lad of 15 years old and spent 7 years as an apprentice. Once he received his “diploma” from his teacher, he became a Journeyman where he traveled to other blacksmith shops to earn a wage of $3-5/day – nearly three times the wage of a laborer.

“Not Wall Street money, but a good family supporting wage just like the trades today,” I said.

“Henry then met the love of his life, Wilhemina and they built this shop to make all the tools in their farming community.” Another guest suggested, “Just like the modern-day hardware store?” Jimmy respectfully answered the question by saying, “No. More like Milwaukee Tool. Blacksmiths make the tools to keep the community working.”

After a while, Jimmy’s Mom suggested that they move onto the other sites at Old World Wisconsin. Jimmy protested, “Mom – you know this is my favorite place. Can I spend the whole day here?” She convinced him to leave with the promise of ice cream at the creamery and a willingness to return at the end of the day.

When they returned, Jimmy’s Mom asked him to share his neatly printed notes with me.

  • Wait two years to start apprenticeship
  • Learn from a teacher for seven years
  • Work as a Journeyman to help in other blacksmith shops and save money
  • Get married
  • Build our own blacksmith shop and raise a family

“I like your plan,” I said. “Maybe you can be a Teen Apprentice at Old World Wisconsin when you turn 14 and then an apprentice at Milwaukee Tool after high school. They have several opportunities to learn the trade.”

“Thanks Mister! I sure wish I was older than eight and a half.”

As he and his Mom left, I knew that the future of the tool making trade was in good hands.

St. Peter's Church

Built in 1839, St. Peter's Church was moved to Old World Wisconsin from Milwaukee. It is the oldest Catholic Church in Wisconsin. Hear how the building was moved and re-built from former construction supervisor, Alan Pape.

Thanks to the Volunteers!

This month we want to thank the Landscapes and Gardens volunteers for all they do! Old World Wisconsin is a large site with many gardens, trails, and prairies. These volunteers work tirelessly to make sure that guests continue to enjoy the flowers and plants grown on site. In October, the main focus was preparing for Halloween Legends and Lore. Because of the warm weather, many of the carved pumpkins used during the event were replaced for each weekend.

Michael & Cathy Paddock

Mike says, “What I love the most about working at Old World is the smiles from the guests as they learn. The multigenerational aspect of Old World is unique, and I really enjoy watching kids connect with their parents and grandparents over Wisconsin history.”

“The Old World Team is amazing! They are so dedicated and knowledgeable. You cannot help but get caught up in their passion.”

Meet Michael Paddock

Michael Paddock began working at Old World Wisconsin in the spring of 2025 and he is passionate about Wisconsin history and OWW. The Paddock family were Yankee farmers and came to Wisconsin in 1856. The farm is still owned and operated by the family, making it one of the longest continuously operated farms in Wisconsin. The family traces its roots back to Plymouth Colony where Robert Paddock was the colony’s first blacksmith in 1630.

Mike is a licensed Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor who has led over 100 infrastructure projects on five different continents. Locally, he led the design teams for major roadway projects including the Marquette and Zoo interchanges prior to joining Old World.

Mike and his wife Cathy met at Michigan Tech University and have been married for 36 years. They live in Mukwonago and Cathy works at the Blood Center Research Institute in the platelet molecular biology laboratory.

You may find Mike working at the blacksmith shop or making butter on one of the farms.

Old World Foundation is happy to welcome

Colleen Scholl to our Board of Trustees!

–– We asked Colleen to introduce herself...

“Hello! My name is Colleen Scholl, and I am excited to be joining the Old World Wisconsin Foundation as the newest Trustee!

In my day job I am the Senior Vice President of Enterprise Risk for HDR an architectural, engineering, and environmental services firm headquartered in Omaha with a local office in Madison. I love to travel and explore different cultures around the world. I am also an avid scuba diver, which fits in well with my love of travel, and have been a certified diver for over 20 years. My husband Mark and I live just down the road in Whitewater with our two furry children and have been regular visitors to Old World since we moved to the area in 2016. Next time you are at Old World, be sure to stop by Wittnebel’s Tavern for a drink and you might run into Mark behind the bar.

I grew up in a small coal mining town in rural Pennsylvania at a time when so much of the heritage of the different ethnic groups that settled in the area was still cherished, preserved through tradition, and celebrated. As a young person, I always enjoyed attending different celebrations and events, listening to the legends of the early coal miners or experiencing their different holiday traditions. Unfortunately, many of the stories of those who came before us and the lives they led are being lost to time. And that’s what attracted me to the mission of Old World Wisconsin – the importance of continuing to cherish and share those stories of our collective past. “

Charity Meets Strategy: Estate Planning That Makes a Difference

Donor Advised Funds

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) allows individuals to make a charitable contribution to a sponsoring organization, such as a community foundation or financial institution, and receive an immediate income tax deduction for the taxable year the donation was made. From there, the donor can recommend how and when the funds should be distributed to qualified charities over time. While the sponsoring organization of the Donor Advised Fund has final discretion, donor recommendations are generally honored to promote flexibility and continued involvement with he donor. Contributions to a DAF are removed from the donor's taxable estate, and more importantly, charities benefit from well timed gifts.

As you begin to think about year-end giving, we encourage you to speak with your financial planner or estate planning attorney to discuss your specific situation.
