Feb. 20 Informational Meeting for CHMS Families - Next year, our school day will be 8:40-2:22 every Monday, and 8:40-3:52 Tuesday-Friday. In addition, the MMSD Board of Education has adopted a new wellness policy which will affect the time students are afforded for lunch and recess. These two changes will be discussed at this parent informational meeting, as well as information regarding our status as a Title I school. While this status is not changing, there is information available for families regarding what it means to be a Title I school, and the benefits we receive from being designated as such. We hope to see you there from 6-7 to learn about the current status of our school and to dialog around the changes we are working toward for the future!

Message from our PTO-
Our playground has been a great addition to our school. The playground committee has heard from the kids that we are in need of a little more equipment- additional swings and tether balls. We plan to add the additional equipment this summer.

We are working on additional fundraising to add phase 2 of the playground. We had a raffle at our winter concerts and were able to raise $150 and just received a $1000 grant from Madison4kids to help purchase a swing. We are continuing to arrange restaurant nights at local restaurants. The next night is Tuesday, February 12 at Chipotle on University Avenue from 4-8. They will donate 33% of their sales to our PTO! We have also arranged a Cherokee night at Sky Zone on February 28 from 4-8pm. Our kids will get a chance to hang out with their friends and get some exercise while contributing to their playground!

We are planning a silent auction for this spring and would love some additional parent volunteers to help with this fundraiser. Additionally, we are helping to plan some fun events to help celebrate "Every Kid Healthy Week" at the end of April and received a $1000 grant from Action for Healthy Kids to help with this.

There are lots of opportunities for parents to get involved. If you would like to help out, please contact Deanna Simonson at  dlsimonson@madison.k12.wi.us . If you would like to contribute financially to the playground, donations of any amount are appreciated and can be made by:
●      Donating online through our PTO website at:   https://www.cherokeeheightspto.org/playground-project/
Sending a check made out to:  CHMS PTO, P.O. Box 5587, Madison, WI 53705
Or dropping off a check in the Cherokee School Office during school hours.
Please make sure check is designated for “playground fund”.

Cherokee Heights PTO has 501(c)(3) non-profit status and donations are tax deductible.  We will acknowledge all donations

FREE English and Spanish Language Classes - Cherokee Heights Middle School, will be offering FREE English and Spanish language classes for parents during the spring 2019 semester. Parents will have the opportunity to attend free weekly classes of either English or Spanish language instruction and then practice their new skills in conversation exchanges with other parents. There will be Free childcare available. Please let us know 24 hours in advance of the meeting if childcare is needed.

These classes are brought to you thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools (FMPS) and the generous donation by the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Classes began on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 and will run for 8 weeks from 6-8pm, and run to March . They will be held at Cherokee Heights Middle School. For the last 30 minutes of class, the classes join for an interchange session. This means learners of English and learners of Spanish interact, talk, and practice their skills, sharing a common ground of interchangeable knowledge.

Please let us know if you would like to attend so that we can plan accordingly by emailing Edith Beltran ebeltran@madison.k12.wi.us.
