Cherokee Heights Chatter

Hello Cherokee Heights friends and families,

Brrrr...it sure is chilly these days! In case you were wondering, here is information on how MMSD makes decisions about school closures due to weather. Additionally, we follow this wind chill chart to make determinations about when students go outside due to cold temperatures. The combination of temperatures and wind are factors when determining if students will get to go outdoors, or need to stay in, and is consistent with all schools in MMSD. Please be sure to remind your student about the importance of dressing for outdoor weather in the winter - going outside is an expectation for all students unless the guidelines above indicate otherwise. We received a generous donation of winter items from our Adopt-a-School partners and have items available if you need any winter gear - please just ask!

Hopefully, I'll get to see some of you this week at our Parent Informational meeting. If you would like to learn about some scheduling options we are considering for next year, and learn about what it means and entails to be a Title I school, please join us from 6-7 in the LMC!

Take care and stay warm,

Dr. Sarah Chaja-Clardy,
Principal

FREE English and Spanish Language Classes - Cherokee Heights Middle School, will be offering FREE English and Spanish language classes for parents during the spring 2019 semester. Parents will have the opportunity to attend free weekly classes of either English or Spanish language instruction and then practice their new skills in conversation exchanges with other parents. There will be Free childcare available. Please let us know 24 hours in advance of the meeting if childcare is needed.

These classes are brought to you thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools (FMPS) and the generous donation by the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Classes began on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 and will run for 8 weeks from 6-8pm, and run to March . They will be held at Cherokee Heights Middle School. For the last 30 minutes of class, the classes join for an interchange session. This means learners of English and learners of Spanish interact, talk, and practice their skills, sharing a common ground of interchangeable knowledge.

Please let us know if you would like to attend so that we can plan accordingly by emailing Edith Beltran ebeltran@madison.k12.wi.us.

Jan. 30 Informational Meeting for CHMS Families - Next year, our school day will be 8:40-2:22 every Monday, and 8:40-3:52 Tuesday-Friday. In addition, the MMSD Board of Education has adopted a new wellness policy which will affect the time students are afforded for lunch and recess. These two changes will be discussed at this parent informational meeting, as well as information regarding our status as a Title I school. While this status is not changing, there is information available for families regarding what it means to be a Title I school, and the benefits we receive from being designated as such. We hope to see you there from 6-7 to learn about the current status of our school and to dialog around the changes we are working toward for the future!
