The Head's Head's UP!
The search for a new school leader is an exciting time in the life of a school and can also be an unnerving one! There are many unknowns for each constituent group and many ideas about what should or could be next. We are so fortunate to be searching for the 12th Head of School at a time when the school is in such a strong position on all fronts. The new Head of School will take over leadership of a vibrant, dynamic, healthy school community on July 1, 2023.
Our search consultants, The Education Group (TEG), sent surveys in the spring to all constituents asking about the qualifications, qualities, and characteristics you hope the new Head of School exhibits. From that point forward, TED vetted prospective candidates and have worked tirelessly to present an accomplished candidate pool to the Search Committee, appointed by the Board of Trustees. The Search Committee, co-chaired by Ron Mihills and Bill Chapman, has put in countless hours in service of finding the right match for Chesapeake Academy. The Search Committee will be updating constituents soon on the next phase.
The efforts to put forth our “best selves” to attract excellent candidates relies on all constituents to play a part. We want any finalist candidate who comes on campus to know and feel that we are representing all our wonderful qualities: a supportive community, tremendous students, connected families, and excellent faculty and staff members! Once finalist candidate visits are scheduled, there will be opportunities for constituent engagement and feedback to the Search Committee.
As a parent, how can you best participate in the process?
- Connect with CAPPA and volunteer for different activities on campus – engage so that you are a participant, contributor, and partner with CA! Educating your child is not a business transaction (we aren't making widgets in a factory); we work together with you for the success of each of your children as they learn, grow, change, and mature.
- Commit to attending a “Meet and Greet” with each finalist candidate if you are able to (schedule will come out soon from the Search Committee).
- Complete a questionnaire on your time spent with each finalist candidate within 24 hours of the meeting so your feedback will be part of the process.
- Stay connected with your child's teacher, with me, with other administrators, with CAPPA, and with other parents throughout the process of welcoming a new Head of School to Chesapeake Academy and to Irvington.
As I like to say to our students, together we build the community we want and need each and every day! The school needs your enthusiasm and partnership to bring our best to each other and our community.
With much gratitude,
State of the School October 2022
Julie

Scholastic Book Fair
Chesapeake Academy's Scholastic Book Fair is returning to our campus this fall. Shopping at the book fair is a great childhood memory maker, and all purchases support the mission of the James Library. Tuesday, November 1, and Wednesday, November 2 are preview days. Families are welcome to browse the selection in the library from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. and 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. Use this time to explore the possibilities and to plan a budget.
Please note, we are required to charge sales tax this year.
The fair will be open for purchases beginning Thursday, November 3 through Thursday, November 10 from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. and 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. Please come through the front office and sign in with Ms. Amy to shop. Some book quantities will be limited, but we will do our best to restock during the fair.
Friday, November 4 is Grandparents' and Grandfriends' Day. The library will be open from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. and from 11:00 to 12:30 p.m. for this special event. We want you to be aware of some changes when visiting in person. Please note, Scholastic gives you the option of setting up an eWallet for your student. Any funds not used during the fair are not refunded by Scholastic.
Parents also have the option to browse the fair electronically.
Our Scholastic homepage is CA's Scholastic Book Fair Page.

Green Thumbs Abound in Kindergarten
What is the best way to learn the parts of plants and what they need to grow well? Get your hands dirty! Kindergarten visited M&M Building Supply in Hartfield, receiving a quick lesson in plants that will survive the cold weather and choosing from the large selection of very healthy vegetables and flowers. Kindergarten's wagon gardens are weeded, planted, and growing with a fall crop of pansies, swiss chard, and various dianthus, snapdragon, and ornamental cabbage.

Trouble Gum is No Trouble At All
for Emerging Writers!
Learning to be effective writers is loads of bubble-popping fun in second grade! After reading Trouble Gum by Matthew Cordell, students practiced drawing personal connections, sequencing events, and summarizing the story. They drew pictures to go along with their writings. For an added bonus, writers were able to chew gum and blow bubbles as they worked!

Boney, Boney Bodies Suit the Season!
As part of the human body unit, fourth grade has been studying the skeletal system. In this activity, the children learned that there are three different kinds of joints! So students are assembling a book to identify where the types of joints are located. An upcoming extension activity will be making a model of the human hand and assembling the joints in order to make it functional.

Math Labs Drive Mathematical Thinking Deeper!
Who doesn't love Cake Boss? Sixth grade math lab students started a Cake Boss-inspired 3D measurement project. This project serves as an extension to the sixth grade math unit on area, surface area, and properties of 3D shapes--and it is great fun! Students are designing a three-tier cake made out of at least two different polyhedra. Here, students are working on the sketches of their cake designs. Next, students will decide on the dimensions of their cakes, calculate the volume and surface area, and build a model out of just paper and tape.

Did You know Earth Has Four Spheres?
The area near the surface of the Earth can be divided into four interconnected spheres: lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. Sixth grade science students are learning about the Earth’s spheres and enjoyed a “walk-about” reading descriptions of places on Earth posted around the school on cards. Students compared discriptions with definitions, working with their partner to determine which sphere was being described. Such a fun way to understand the difference between the spheres!

Explore the Pop Art Movement/Save Northern Neck Ginger Ale
Chesapeake Academy eighth grade students studied how the pop art movement evolved as a reaction to the rise of consumerism in the 1950s and 60s. Student artists focused mainly on the iconic work of Andy Warhol, especially his famous Campbell's Soup cans, Coca Cola bottles, and Brillo steel wool. Students then created a pop art piece in his style featuring the sorely missed Northern Neck Ginger Ale.

Honor Board Signing
The Chesapeake Academy Honor Code is designed to promote honesty, respect, citizenship, and integrity within the student community. This code of honor serves as the underlying ethical benchmark which all Academy students are expected to observe and respect. An Honor Code Signing Ceremony is held at the beginning of each school year for all Middle School students.
At the recent ceremony in Chesapeake Academy's Middle School, students solemnly pledged on their honor to uphold the Chesapeake Academy Honor Code as they publicly signed the Honor Board. The Student Council is responsible for promoting and explaining the Honor Code to the student body, as well as modeling the code in everyday practice.

Coach's Corner
We've had another great fall sports season, and each of our teams has continued to grow and improve overall. It's been fun watching our Ospreys in action; and if you haven't gotten a chance to support them, you still have time!
CA's Varsity Soccer Team has a bye in the semifinal round of the ISAC tournament due to their #1 seed ranking. They will play in the ISAC Championship game on Thursday, October 20, at Christchurch School at 4:30 p.m. Last year's game was a great one, and we could use your support as we look to three-peat as ISAC Soccer Champions!
Our Varsity Volleyball Team will be playing in the semifinal round of the ISAC tournament on Monday, October 24, at 4:30 p.m. The team will be playing Aylett Country Day School, and your support would be greatly appreciated! We've split with the Patriots during the regular season, and this promises to be yet another fun match to watch! With a win on Monday, the team will look to an ISAC Volleyball Championship match on Wednesday, October 26, at 4:30 p.m. against Ware Academy.
Please check your calendars, and if you're able to come out to support our Ospreys we'd love to see you on the sideline/in the stands!
Go Ospreys!
