Take Flight!

This month CCM provides several opportunities to learn about Orville, Wilbur, and Katherine Wright. The brothers, you may know, were the first to successfully use a machine to power human flight in 1903. In childhood, they studied birds, designed kites, and tinkered with bicycles. Said Orville, "We had to go ahead & discover everything ourselves." Curiosity and natural talent drove them to their achievements.

Their younger sister, Katherine was following a different path. When the children's mother, Susan, became ill and eventually died of tuberculosis, Katherine became the caregiver and household manager. Their father, Milton, encouraged her to go to college which enabled her to become a teacher. (None of her brothers attended college.)

Her teaching career was interrupted when a demonstration flight in 1908 left Orville with severe injuries. Katherine's devotion and management skills not only helped Orville recover but spread to supporting the young men in their quest to perfect their invention and launch the business.

Celebrate National Aviation Day on Aug. 19th. The shared birthday of Orville and Katherine Wright!

FIFTY YEARS AGO

in August, 1976, Alex Haley published his book Roots, The Saga of an American Family.

Local events at Annapolis City Dock and the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum precede a trip to follow Kunta Kinte's life story in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Attention Young Poets! Envía tu poema

Students who live or study in Annapolis (public or private school, home school, or college) are invited to submit an original poem by August 17. This is a collaborative project of the City of Annapolis, the Organization of Hispanics / Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County, the Center of Help/Centro de Ayuda, the Chesapeake Children's Museum, and the City's Poet Laureate Jefferson Holland.

The Office of Hispanic Community Services is hosting a Book Cover Art Contest for artists ages 15-20 years-old. Submit your original artwork by August 12. All entries that meet City guidelines will be showcased in the City Hall Latin Art Gallery during Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating the creativity and talent of our community's young artists.

Make RESERVATIONS to visit the museum.

CCM is open EVERY DAY and the park is always free and open during daylight hours.

Maryland is home to some year-round Canada geese who go through an interesting change in the summer. They molt (drop their feathers) and can't fly for about a month until the new feathers finish coming in!

Beware of increased goose poop on beaches and shorelines where the flightless geese wobble and unload.
