We've been planning for a really terrific market for tomorrow. The farmers have been harvesting all week to make sure the fall produce is as fresh as possible. Enjoy the last couple weeks of the summer produce while it's still coming to market. We're going to miss you, local tomato!
Unfortunately, Local 130 Seafood had to call out. Sorry for any inconvenience.
The big news is pawpaws! One of our most elusive local foods, the pawpaw is our native tropical fruit, the only tropical fruit that grows this far north. It has an interesting natural history, was featured prominently in Lewis & Clark's journals, and even has an Appalachian folk song written about it. "Pickin' up pawpaws, put 'em in your pocket...way down yonder in the pawpaw patch!"
They go by other names: the prairie banana, the custard apple, the banango. Those names kind of describes its flavor, which can taste like a cross between a mango and a banana with the texture of custard. If they look "rotten," don't worry. They are ripe and delicious when they turn that dark color.
Find these pawpaws at Primordia Farm's stand. They have a short season, maybe two weeks, three weeks at the most. Here today, gone tomorrow, that's the pawpaw season.
