Chez News: January 2023

January 2023

A Note from Notre Dame's President, Sr. Virginia O'Brien, S.U.

Dear Alumnae, Students, Friends, and Families,

For the Notre Dame community, 2023 has kicked off with a month of promoting respect and giving back. Ninth graders mark Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with inspired artwork currently on display at the New York State Capital in Albany. Our school has consistently focused on what we term DEIG (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and the Gospel). That effort starts with our leadership. Our Board of Trustees have participated in more than fourteen hours of DEIG training and education over the past two years, with topics including microaggressions, anti-racism strategic planning, and gender equity. Our faculty and students have engaged in similar sessions addressing topics such as implicit bias and cultural competency. It is ongoing and joyful work at our school.

Twenty five young alumnae spent time during their own school breaks to return to their alma mater and share words of wisdom with their Chez Nous Sisters from the Class of '24, who are now embarking on their own college search journeys. We warmly invite Notre Dame alumnae, parents, and caregivers to volunteer for our upcoming Career Fair on Friday, February 10th.

Finally, we are delighted to announce that tickets are now on sale for the 66th Annual Chez Nous Benefit, which will once again be in person at Pier Sixty on Saturday, March 25th from noon to 4pm! The Chez Nous Benefit is a Notre Dame tradition, complete with a gourmet three course meal, open bar, live auction, and a paddle raise for the scholarship fund. This is an exciting and fun afternoon for our community to come together to celebrate our Notre Dame students. Read more about the Benefit and purchase your tickets here.

With all good wishes for the New Year,

Mr. Stordeur's 9th grade class in African American History entered into New York State's Martin Luther King, Jr. Art & Essay Exhibit. Here is a sample of works by Notre Dame students that will be displayed on the official New York State website and at the State Capitol in Albany on Dr. King's birthday. The artworks will be on display all year!

Career Panel 2023!

With 26 alumnae in attendance, ND hosted 2 panels simultaneously, in the library and pictured here in the Dolan Center.

On January 5th, two dozen recent Notre Dame graduates gave up a morning of their college break (and some precious sleep) to return to their alma mater promptly at 8:15 am for candid conversations with our current juniors, who are now beginning their own college search process. It's an exciting time for the Class of '24 but also a nerve-wracking one. Fortunately, their Chez Nous Sisters currently enrolled in colleges and universities--including schools such as Cornell, Villanova, Columbia, Fordham, George Washington, Boston College, Vanderbilt, and many others--have their backs!

Asked what they know now about applying to and selecting a college to attend that they wish they knew as high school juniors, our panelists had a range of responses: "It's okay to enter college undecided about your major." "Be sure to consider what you will spend your time doing at college outside of your classes when you think about fit." "Make sure your school offers guaranteed housing and learn about the meal plan ahead of time." "Don't get fixated on a 'dream school'--what you want now may change." "It's not the end of the world to get rejected from some schools." "Don't be afraid to choose a school others may not have heard of." "Trust your gut," and "Keep an open mind."

In terms of overcoming challenges during the transition to college life, our panelists offered helpful advice: "Put yourself out there." "Join clubs." "You don't need a massive friend group. Spend time with those you feel good being with." "Pay attention to that syllabus!" "Don't expect to get all As." "Reach out to professors and peers for academic help."

Finally, our young alums were asked to offer a brief response to "What has been the best part of being a college student? What do current juniors have to look forward to?" Their answers did not disappoint: "Independence," "Community," "A Widened Perspective," "Freedom," "Finding myself," and "Personal Growth."

Heartfelt thanks to these wise and wonderful alumnae for sharing their time and experiences with their avid Chez Nous Sisters!
