Network Updates
One of our most recent updates for this newsletter, is that Leticia Boughton, Network Coordinator; wrote an article for The Nursing Voice newspaper. In which she highlights the importance of the role that community health workers play in the community and for the health care system. As the the Affordable Care Act is implemented, community based health care  will take on greater importance and will require a full spectrum of workers to ensure access to care. A role that is being developed to augment public health outreach is that of the Community Health Worker (CHW).

Curriculum Update:

The CHW curriculum is set to start Fall 2014 at SSC.  We are currently seeking CHW champions with a Master's Degree to teach courses and CHW's willing to co-teach.  If you are interested please send your resume to Leticia Boughton at lboughton@healthconnectone.org.

The Network is at the table with Rush University, Malcolm X College and the Medical Home Network as they are planning the implementation of a CHW curriculum for the City College system. Through a generous grant from BMO Harris Bank, Rush University Medical Center and Malcolm X College will implement a CHW program.  For more information please contact Leticia Boughton at boughton@healthconnectone.org.

CHW Trainings
We ended 2013 with a nice CHW wellness day. We want to thank the Loyola Medical Students who helped to plan the event, Elizabeth Stranges, Audrey Hertenstein and Sue Davenport for giving us a cooking demonstration.  For February we plan to train CHWs and other interested individuals on Heart Health.

Here are a few pictures that were taken at the Wellness Day for CHWs.

American Hearth Month
February is American Hearth Heath Month. Part of the Chicago CHW Local Network mission is to provide relevant health information to as many people as we can reach.

It is very important that you consult with your doctor before starting any physical activity or a new diet.

Here's a little information on how important it is to incorporate a little of physical activity in our daily routine.

By exercising for as little as 30 minutes a day you can reduce your risk of heart disease. In fact, studies show that for every hour of walking, you may increase your life expectancy by two hours. The time to get moving is now! Start with a small goal and commit to it regularly. It wont be long before you're enjoying the benefits of an active life.
