CHICAGO HAWKS & DARIEN PHANTOMS

Pretty much as soon as your child learns to walk, there is a program for him or her at the Darien Sportsplex. The Chicago Hawks and the Darien Sportsplex offer a Learn to Skate program starting at the age of 3 followed immediately by a Learn to Play program. When your child thinks he/she is ready for some fun, the Hawks have an introduction to hockey in a half-ice game format called Silver Mites which is geared towards the 5 and 6 year olds or 2010 and 2009 birth years. At the age of 7, your child can try out for travel hockey with the Hawks. The Hawks offer travel hockey through the age of 18 years old. The levels of travel hockey are Mites (7 and 8 year olds or 2008 and 2007 birth years), Squirts (9 and 10 year olds or 2006 and 2005 birth years), PeeWees (11 and 12 year olds or 2004 and 2003 birth years), Bantams (13 and 14 year olds or 2002 and 2001 birth years) and Midgets (15-18 year olds or 2000 through 1997 birth years). All travel hockey is under the name of the Chicago Hawks with one exception. The Darien Phantoms are our Mite level option at the Darien Sportsplex. From your perspective, the only difference you may see is the different name and the different jerseys. Yet, your child will still practice at the Sportsplex and play their home games there too. As soon as your child turns 9 and enters his/her squirt year, he or she will go back to wearing the Chicago Hawks' jerseys, which will hopefully continue until they are 18.

For some families, travel hockey is not an option. Whether it be the time commitment, the travel commitment, or one of many other valid reasons, having every practice and game at Darien may be the sensible choice for them. A joint program offered at the Sportsplex by the Darien Park District and the Chicago Hawks is called In-House. Dates and information for Learn to Skate, Learn to Play and In-House are outlined below. If you have any additional questions, feel free to email [email protected].
