CORE Prevention Festival Reaches Over 900 Students

The Child & Family Center’s CORE (Community, Outreach, Resources, and Education) Prevention team recently hosted a dynamic CORE Prevention Festival at Sierra Vista Junior High School in recognition of National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week.

The full-day event reached more than 900 students, integrating interactive prevention education throughout P.E. classes, brunch, and lunch. Through hands-on activities, educational materials, and incentive-based participation, students gained practical tools to support healthy, substance-free decision-making.

The festival highlighted strong community collaboration, featuring partners such as the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s VIDA Program, Phoenix House, MB2 Entertainment, Tarzana Treatment Center, Santa Clarita’s DFY Program, Sierra Vista social workers, and the Child & Family Center’s Pathways to Recovery Team.

Child & Family Center extends its thanks to Principal Marcus Garret and school social worker Amanda Markovich for their leadership and commitment to student wellness.

“This festival shows what’s possible when schools and community partners come together with a shared goal,” said Luis Fragoza, CORE Outreach and Education Supervisor. “Together, we’re creating spaces where students can learn, connect, and build skills that will benefit them for life.”

Celebrating Our Team at the All-Staff Meeting

This month, Child & Family Center brought staff together for an energizing All-Staff Meeting, an opportunity to connect, share updates, and celebrate the people who make our mission possible every day.

A highlight of the gathering was recognizing team members who go above and beyond. Congratulations to our Core Values Champions, including Cindy Vincent, as well as our Employee of the Quarter. Your dedication, compassion, and commitment truly reflect the heart of the work we do in service of children and families in our community.

We are grateful for our incredible team and the meaningful impact we continue to make... together!

"Woman Who Serve"

Congratulations to Child & Family Center’s own Board Member, Kris Huber! We’re proud to celebrate her nomination for Women Who Serve, an honor presented by Zonta that recognizes dynamic, multi‑generational women volunteers from nonprofit organizations who generously give their time, talents, and hearts to strengthen communities throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

This recognition reflects Kris’s dedication to service and the meaningful impact she continues to make through her leadership and commitment to our mission.

Child and Family Center Served 859 Clients in the Month of February

March 17-23 National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week

In March we emphasized the importance of accurate information, open conversations, and promoting healthy choices among youth. With early substance use increasing the risk of long-term addiction, education and prevention are key to helping young people make informed decisions.

National Social Work Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the dedicated social workers at Child & Family Center who support children, families, and individuals with compassion, professionalism, and care.

Through prevention, early intervention, and healing‑centered services, social workers play a vital role in strengthening families, fostering resilience, and promoting long‑term well‑being.

Their commitment to advocacy, connection, and empowerment helps create safe spaces where individuals can feel supported, understood, and valued. This month, and every month, we honor the impact social workers have in building healthier families and stronger communities

Evelyn, a survivor of domestic violence and mother of two, was actively participating in the program’s domestic violence support groups and educational classes while facing an urgent housing crisis. Her temporary housing voucher was set to expire, placing her and her children at imminent risk of homelessness. As the deadline approached, Evelyn experienced heightened anxiety and fear about her family’s safety and stability. Program advocates worked closely with Evelyn, providing ongoing emotional support, safety planning, and case management.

Through coordinated advocacy, staff connected her with housing assistance through LA Family Housing and supported her throughout the application process. Evelyn remained engaged in services, attending groups regularly and utilizing coping skills learned in class to manage stress during this uncertain time.

As a result of these combined efforts, Evelyn was approved for housing assistance before her voucher expired and successfully secured stable housing for herself and her two children. With safe, permanent housing in place, Evelyn reports a significant reduction in anxiety and an increased sense of safety and hope for the future. She continues to focus on healing, strengthening her independence, and creating a stable environment for her children.
