How do we prevent child abuse?

In 2021, Oregon DHS confirmed 10,766 victims of child abuse across our state—1,094 in Marion County and 293 in Polk County. Of all victims, 42% were children 5 years old and younger. This is unthinkable and heartbreaking to know it happens in our neighborhood.

The good news? Child abuse is preventable.

This April, you can join community-wide efforts for Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month by supporting organizations focused on strengthening families, building safe relationships with children, and educating yourself to recognize signs and react responsibly to child abuse.

Along with assessment and treatment, Liberty House also offers various child abuse prevention and online safety trainings. Additional opportunities to attend these trainings are available for the community during the month of April. They are free, virtual, and are offered in English and Spanish! Register for a training and check out our upcoming Safe & Sound blog series at www.irespectandprotect.com.

You can also raise awareness and take a stand against child abuse by registering and participating in the Marion County CAP Car Parade on the morning of Friday, April 7th. And you can join our Jeans Day campaign by making a suggested $5 donation and wearing jeans on Fridays in April. For more info about Jeans Day or to attend a tour of Liberty House in the evening of Tuesday, April 4th, contact Adrienne Christian.

We are so deeply thankful for your support. Because of people like you, many children have received the care they need, and many will never experience abuse in the first place!

Everyone has a role in preventing child abuse. Prevention happens when you become more aware and act. Join us in making healthy childhoods and bright futures!

Board of Directors Spotlight: Kathy Gordon
Kathy Gordon is a Partner Emeritus at Aldrich CPAs & Advisors here in Salem. Last September, she joined our Board of Directors!

How did you first hear about Liberty House?
Wow, it was a while ago, but Keeta Lauderdale (former board member) and I have known each other a long time and she let me know. And about that same time, I heard about Liberty House through the community grapevine.

What inspired you to join Liberty House as part of the Board of Directors?
I saw this as an opportunity to work with a talented staff and board to enhance the mission of Liberty House in addressing childhood trauma and building a better community.

What do you hope to accomplish while serving?
I hope to continue the good work already in motion, help in planning for the future, and provide any assistance that I can from my background as a CPA and community advocate.

Thank you, Kathy, for choosing to serve with us!
