Human Trafficking Awareness Month
January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Human Trafficking is broken down into two different types, sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Sex trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a person for the purposes of a commercial sex act, in which the commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion. Labor trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, using force, fraud, or coercion for the purposes of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery.
It is important that the entire community be on the lookout for indicators of human trafficking including, but not limited to:
-unstable living situations/homelessness
-being fearful of authorities
-physical injuries including bruises and burns
-tattoos/branding
-avoiding social situations/not able to go out alone
These are only a few possible signs and not a guarantee that an individual is in a human trafficking situation. There are systems in place that allow for these victims to be properly identified and provided with appropriate services.
If you suspect that someone is being human trafficked, please reach out to your local law enforcement agency. You can also contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1 (888) 373-7888.
January 11 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Please join Child Advocacy as we wear BLUE to show support for raising awareness on January 11. Encourage everyone around you to partake in #WearBlueDay and to send Child Advocacy your photos with the hashtag #WearBlueDay so they can be shared on our Facebook Page.
