Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month 2024

As we mark Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month this September, it's vital to recognize that every year, over 3,500 infants in the United States die from sleep-related causes, such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and accidental suffocation. Unsafe sleep environments significantly contribute to these tragic outcomes. By adhering to key safe sleep guidelines, we can make a profound difference in preventing these incidents and ensuring that every baby sleeps safely.

Here’s how you can help ensure that babies sleep safely:

1. Always Place Baby on Their Back: For every nap and overnight sleep, place your baby on their back in a safe sleep environment, such as a crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play.

2. Use a Firm Mattress: Opt for a firm mattress with a tightly fitted sheet. Avoid soft bedding that could pose a suffocation hazard.

3. Keep the Sleep Area Clutter-Free: Ensure the sleep space is free from pillows, blankets, and toys to minimize the risk of suffocation and other hazards.

4. Avoid Overheating: Instead of using blankets, keep your baby warm with a sleep sack, wearable blanket, or footed sleeper, and avoid covering their head.

5. Educate All Caregivers: Make sure that everyone who cares for your baby, including babysitters, family members, and friends, is informed about and follows safe sleep practices.

Helpful Resources for Safe Sleep Education:

- Childcare Settings: For tips on ensuring safe sleep practices in childcare settings, check out this resource, which includes a helpful checklist for evaluating potential providers.

- Educational Videos:

  - For Grandparents: Watch Here

Our mission is to spread awareness about safe sleep practices and clarify any misconceptions surrounding them. We know that recommendations can change over time, which can be confusing. If you’d like more information about safe sleep initiatives or need educational materials, please contact us at (989) 463-1422.

Order Free Safe Sleep Materials:

Visit Healthy Michigan to request free safe sleep materials for your organization or business.

By working together, we can create safe sleep environments for infants everywhere and reduce the risk of sleep-related tragedies. Thank you for your dedication to this crucial cause.

Greetings,

Happy Fall! This is one of my favorite times of the year here in Central Michigan. Thank you to all who participated in our Suicide Prevention Month awareness activities in September. We hope you will continue to participate in educational and training opportunities for suicide prevention throughout the year. I would also like to thank everyone that participated in our Trivia Night Fundraiser this past month including players, silent auction donors, and sponsors. We could not do what we do without your support!

Today marks the start to the new fiscal year for Child Advocacy. We look forward to new training, curriculums, events, and much more this next year. Please follow our Facebook page, Child Advocacy-Gratiot County, to stay up to date on our offerings. Also, we hope you will join us for some fun on October 25th for our Game Day Challenge (see the flyer below for details). Have a wonderful October!
