How Social and Emotional Learning Transforms Classrooms
Greater Good Magazine at UC Berkeley
Social and Emotional Learning doesn’t just change the teaching – it changes the teachers and students. “Before I started working with SEL, sometimes I got so stressed that I lost contact with my original intention for becoming a teacher. SEL has rekindled that light inside of me. It’s the light of why I became an educator in the first place—to help students connect with their dreams and aspirations and become better people who contribute to the world in a positive way. That’s the power of the SEL lens; it fosters purpose and meaning and deep connection.” -- Meena Srinivasan, program manager for OUSD’s SEL and Leadership Team and author of Teach, Breathe, Learn: Mindfulness in and out of the Classroom.

Resources to Share With Families
September is National Obesity Awareness Month
"National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month offers opportunities for families to prevent childhood obesity early and to address the issue early. Children who have obesity issues are more likely to have those same issues as adults. Addressing them now prevents lifelong health issues such as diabetes, certain cancers, heart and sleep disorders. Children with obesity may face physical, emotional and financial obstacles in the future, as well.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Turn Any Walk into a Nature Walk
Every walk is an opportunity for children to learn about the natural world. Walking around the block with my child when he was 2 years old could take an hour because there was always something new to explore.

Other Early Childhood News & Updates
Recently, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services released a survey to capture the experiences of the early childhood education workforce so the State can better understand the needs of the field -- particularly regarding financial security, professional development, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey was released in partnership with School Readiness Consulting, and you should have received an email asking you to complete the survey in late August. Please note that while participation is voluntary and confidential, every response counts and you have an opportunity to help influence policy decisions in your state!
Please check your email address that is listed in the workforce registry for a message from School Readiness Consulting. You may also receive text messages or telephone calls about the survey from School Readiness Consulting in the coming days.
If you received the message but have not yet completed the survey, please do so as soon as possible. Your responses to the survey are critical as the State makes decisions that will impact your program and the families you serve.
If you did not receive a message with the survey link, please contact krodriguez@schoolreadinessconsulting.com.
Thank you,
Kristina Rodriguez
