Tensions in the legislature’s budget setting committee have started to boil over, with major appropriations like public education and health and welfare still unsettled. On the show this week, we discuss the winding road ahead with Rep. Wendy Horman and Sen. Scott Grow, the co-chairs of the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee, and Democratic committee member Sen. Melissa Wintrow outlines her concerns with this year’s process.

Child welfare budget could potentially increase 20%

The Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee approved an increase of more than 20% for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare's child welfare programs, including 63 new full-time employees focused on foster care and child safety.

Committee advances bill cutting services to undocumented immigrants

Undocumented people are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare in Idaho. However, all low-income people are eligible for medical care such as crisis counseling, prenatal care, postnatal care, immunizations and public health treatment of communicable diseases.

Senate panel approves power utility tax change

Although the tax revenue from utilities would no longer be collected as property taxes, the new revenue would be sent to local taxing districts to use as if it was property tax money.

Digital driver’s license bill narrowly passes House

Idaho Capital Sun: If the bill becomes law, the new digital driver’s licenses would be optional, not required, and people with a mobile driver’s license would still be required to have a physical driver’s license. The bill sponsor said almost three-fourths of states either offer an electronic driver’s license, or are developing one.
