Former waiting youth who were not adopted reach out to CAP in desperation.

-Melanie Schmidt, LMSW

"When are you coming to visit me? I'm lonely."... "I don't have anywhere to go; do you think one of my old foster families will take me in?"... "Will you adopt me?"... "I can't support myself or my baby."

These are examples of the heart breaking calls Children Awaiting Parents (CAP) receives from youth formerly listed on our waiting child photolisting who have aged out of the foster care system without an adoptive family.

CAP is often the last hope for foster youth who have waited years to find a family after all typical adoption resources have been explored. CAP youth have usually come into foster care at a later age after being a victim of abuse or neglect and may have been bounced from home to home or spent time in group homes. Our waiting child photolisting offers children a chance to connect with adoptive families who will help them transition into adulthood and provide life-long love and guidance.

But what happens to the youth on CAP's website if they have not found a family by their 18th birthday? How can we help them?  READ MORE

Ashley Johnson
Residential Clinician I
Hillside Children's Center
Caseworker Corner

CAP would like to give special recognition to Ashley Johnson of Hillside Children's Center! Her exceptional service and partnership with CAP has helped one of CAP's waiting foster youth find his forever family.

Ashley is a dedicated, passionate caseworker. She works with teenagers in a residential facility and understands the impact of "the wait" on our children. Ashley is delicate, yet direct in her contact with youth and works diligently for permanency. Ashley has done a great job facilitating, advocating and ensuring a smooth adoption transition for the CAP youth on her caseload.

Special thanks to Ashley for helping CAP lift the wait for the children in her care!
CAP's Teen Panel a Success!

CAP was very pleased to host our third waiting youth Teen Panel in Geneva, NY on March 8th. Each of the 6 youth who participated did an amazing job opening up about their experience in foster care. The youth articulately expressed their need for support and permanency. They were honest about their difficult experience and educated prospective families about the needs and desires of foster youth. The children were empowered by the opportunity to have their perspective heard and respected. CAP is looking forward to hosting more teen panels that empower youth and give them a chance to connect with interested adoptive families.
