Pinwheels for Prevention

A Morning of Hope!

It was a beautiful morning on April 24th as we joined together with many individuals, community partners, and businesses for our annual Pinwheels for Prevention planting, held in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month. It was one of our most well attended plantings yet, demonstrating the passion and commitment that this community has to support child survivors of abuse.

We were honored to hear from several individuals during the event, including Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, our Executive Director Winn Stephens, Kentucky Deputy Attorney General Rob Duncan, and Emily Miller, CAC of the Bluegrass's board chair and Central Kentucky Market Manager Senior Vice President at Republic Bank.

Together, we planted 1,200 pinwheels, each one representing a child we expect to serve this year. The pinwheel is the national symbol for Child Abuse Prevention Month, symbolizing hope, playfulness, joy, and the life that every child deserves.

We were grateful to be joined by many community partners, including the Lexington Police Department, Madison County Sherriff's Department, Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Fayette Commonwealth and County Attorney’s Offices, Lexington Fire Department, the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office, Kentucky State Police, Bikers Against Child Abuse, and others. Several members of the Kentucky State Legislature and LFUCG Council also joined us to mark the occasion.

A group of amazing volunteers from Gray, Inc. spent a Friday morning at the Center helping us out with some much needed outdoor projects. They were able to weed, mulch, plant flowers, and more in no time!

We have many children and families remark on how warm and inviting our building is, with some even mentioning that it feels like a home. Creating a nurturing and welcoming environment is crucial to the work that we do, and we are grateful to Gray for helping families feel safe as soon as they arrive to our Center.
