Trunk or Treat in Richmond

CAC of the Bluegrass joined several other DCBS partners for a "Trunk or Treat" for foster families at Big Hill Christian Church in Richmond. Approximately 100 children were able to enjoy a safe, fun Halloween experience thanks to these partner agencies.

We are proud to work with such great organizations serving children in Central Kentucky!

Board Member Spotlight

Marion Queen

Rick and Marion Queen at An Evening For The Children's Advocacy Center

Marion Queen has been a fixture in the CAC of the Bluegrass family for many years. She started volunteering the Center in the late 90s, and has been an active member of the board for over 15 years, serving as board president from 2006-2008. She is active in planning and organizing the Center's annual gala, An Evening For The Children's Advocacy Center, and is a vocal advocate for the Center and the children we serve. She says she serves on the board because she believes children who've experienced sexual abuse are "underserved and misunderstood" and that "no one truly understands the lifelong trauma these victims endure." She is proud of how the Center has grown over the years to meet the community's need for services - from the little house on Walton Avenue, to our new home with more space and better facilities to serve the full breadth of needs of child abuse victims in central Kentucky.

Marion is a lifelong Lexingtonian, but loves to get out and travel and go to the beach any chance she gets. She also relishes her role as a mother and grandmother.

Walmart Grant

On October 21st, CAC of the Bluegrass was one of several community organizations that received a grant from the Lexington Hamburg Walmart to celebrate the store's grand reopening.

Staff Spotlight

Laura Atkinson

Office Manager

Laura Atkinson joined the CACBG team a little over a year ago after she and her family returned to the Lexington area following stops in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Nashville. As Office Manager, she is integral to ensuring the office runs smoothly and staff have the materials and support they need to do their jobs well. Laura says she’s proud to work at the Center because “you won’t find a group of people more dedicated to making the world brighter for kids than right here,” and the staff’s commitment to ensuring kids “receive a shining light of resources creating more hopeful days ahead.”

When asked what she does in her free time, Laura says, “Free time? What’s that?” She and her husband have two children and just recently blended their family by taking emergency custody of their two nephews and niece. That means a house with five teenagers! Their days are spent driving carpool, hosting homework sessions, deciphering teenage dialect, and LOTS of soccer! When they get the chance, though, Laura and her family love to travel. They’ve been to Spain and England together, and hope for more fun trips to interesting places in the near future.
