As we begin to carve out our "new normal," I am becoming more aware of some of the new-to-me services that I have learned about as a result of the pandemic. I hope some of these are here to stay, at least in some form. At the top of my list is ordering dinner online, or by phone, and picking up curbside; we have so many wonderful options, and my family is grateful to the many restaurants that have made this happen. Next on my list is definitely grocery and Costco delivery...I am a believer! While I had some hiccups in early pandemic days, I can honestly say I have overcome my learning curve issues and have mastered eCart. I have corresponded via text with so many wonderful shoppers that seem to really care that I am happy with my order, ask questions when they are shopping, check to make sure I don't need something else and finally deliver and carefully place the items on our doorstep; for our family, this is so practical and a real time-saver. Finally, supporting our local businesses has become a priority for us; there has been a certain sense of camaraderie that has developed and while we find ourselves thanking those that have helped us, we find that they are truly appreciative for the support. We have made shopping and dining local a priority and this will certainly stick for us.
While it is not time to throw caution to the wind, there is a sense of optimism as more and more people receive vaccinations. Wearing masks, washing hands, and being aware of distance is still a priority, but the shift to hope and brighter days is here.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, an important calendar distinction for us at The Children's Cabinet as our mission is and always has been to keep children safe. You may notice pinwheels around The Children's Cabinet office on Rock Boulevard, our way to represent this national distinction, more about pinwheels later in this newsletter.

April is National Child Abuse
Prevention Month
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Nevada went blue Friday, April 2, 2021, with the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign. This national event advocates to Prevent Child Abuse. The pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve. We hope every time someone sees a blue pinwheel it brings awareness to the issue of child abuse in our community. The Children's Cabinet gave child care providers in Nevada with pinwheel coloring sheets and supplies to build pinwheels. We also gave them activities that help bring awareness to child abuse and prevention-oriented tips that they can share in their communities.

Program Spotlight: Family Counseling
Family counseling is an important service for families struggling with a variety of fears and concerns. The Children's Cabinet offers free family counseling in our community where therapists help parents have more meaningful relationships with their child, address concerning behavior, and teach families to have better communication and solve problems together.
Our no-cost services are based on a short-term strength-based model and allow families to get the help and support they need. Families with children birth to 17 years old can receive counseling support and young adults 18-24 years old are also able to access counseling. Families meet with their therapist to develop a treatment plan to address concerns and improve family functioning.

We are very fortunate to have the support of the NV Energy Foundation, which donated $15,000 to our Signs of Suicide (SOS) Program.
SOS is a partnership with the Washoe County School District that offers suicide prevention, education, and screenings in all Washoe County Middle Schools. Our dedicated staff collaborates with the individual schools to screen students for signs of suicide or depression. All youth receive a check-in (even during the pandemic) with a case manager or therapist and depending on the results, The Children's Cabinet offers counseling and other resources that can help the student.
We are seeing now more than ever how important it is to have these check-ins with students and the funds provided by NV Energy allow us the opportunity to do so.
Thank you, NV Energy!
