Much to Celebrate in February

And just like that, it is already February. While the groundhog seeing his shadow signals six more weeks of winter, besides the storms last week, it has felt like a pretty mild season this year.  Fortunately, it looks like I will still have time to try-out the snowshoes I received in December!

February marks the start of Black History MonthWe found some great ways to celebrate Black History this month on the NAACP site. 28 different ideas include hosting a Black film marathon, reading a book by a Black author, and cooking a soul food meal. There are amazing books written by Black authors for children and here is a list with many child-friendly book options.

Valentine's Day will be quickly upon us. Despite the fact the world isn't quite normal yet, we hope you find special ways to enjoy the day. If you are looking for fun activities for kids, below we have shared some ideas on how to make the most of the indoors with your little ones. Our favorite Valentine's Day family tradition is ordering, or making, heart-shaped pizza and Caesar salad. We have been doing this since our kids were little and now that they are young adults, we smile when we hear this is a tradition that they are continuing.  Finally, don't forget about that special someone in your life, traditional gifts of a thoughtful card, flowers or candy are a lovely gesture that can be enjoyed in the office or at home.

We hope you all have a productive, peaceful, and happy February.

Celebrate Valentine's Day at Home

Valentine's Day will look a little different year with many families still at home - but you can still make it enjoyable for your little ones! Here is a list of fun (and easy) activities for your children at home:
  • Make a fun Valentine's craft with hearts as your focal point and you can't go wrong! Want more ideas, visit Easy Peasy and Fun.
  • Let your child pick the activity. It can be a favorite board game or even a favorite movie.
  • Make meal-time fun. You could plan a Valentine's Day picnic indoors with a blanket on the floor or even make a fancy dinner with candles on the table.
  • Have your little one share the people, activities, and hobbies they love. Share yours too and use the day to celebrate love!

Program Spotlight: PAT

The Children's Cabinet is excited to present a new program in Elko County called Parents as Teachers (PAT). The Parents as Teachers evidence-based home visiting model is the comprehensive home-visiting, parent education model used by Parents as Teachers Affiliates. PAT is designed to support families with early childhood parent education, well-being, and school readiness, which serves parents with children ages prenatal through kindergarten.

The vision of PAT is that "all children will develop, learn and grow to realize their full potential."

Available in Elko County, parents can contact:
