Let's Celebrate in May

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and an ideal time to check in with yourself and your loved ones to make sure everyone is ok. The other night I was watching a tv show with my 16-year-old daughter and every commercial break featured kids checking in with each other when they noticed their friend didn't seem like themselves. The commercials were so intriguing to me I immediately did an online search to learn more. The website is www.seizetheawkward.org and on their site, you can find some practical conversation starters that you, or your kids, can use to promote kids -and adults- talking about mental health. It is up to all of us to try to reduce the stigma, and an open, honest conversation is a great place to start.

This week marks Teacher Appreciation Week. If you have children in school, take a moment to thank their teacher(s) for all they do every day for our children. This past year has been one that many of us are ready to put behind us, and our teachers have been present in classrooms and via Teams day in and day out throughout the pandemic. Now, more than ever, we recognize and appreciate our hardworking and dedicated teachers and sincerely extend our thanks for all you do.

Mother's Day is nearly here! As per usual, I have dropped some not-so-subtle hints on my vision of the day. I always hope for good weather (the forecast is currently 70 and sunny, I like that) as I love to plant our garden on Mother's Day. I find it relaxing, free of electronics, and my kids (now nearly all adult ages) hang out and putter. It really is about the time spent together for me so if we can plant some things, play a round of "Ticket to Ride" and have dinner with my mom, that is a success in my book! In whatever way you celebrate, we hope you are able to spend the day doing things you enjoy.

Finally, our Art of Childhood fundraising event is back this year and will be held Friday, August 20, 2021, at Rancharrah. Please save the date and join us, we will be sending more details soon. After last year, we are looking forward to an in-person event, and the opportunity to celebrate with you all.

Thank you all for your continued support of our mission to keep children safe and families together.

Program Spotlight: Youth Mental Health First Aid

The Children's Cabinet offers free Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) courses to adults in northern Nevada.

This program is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, and other caring citizens how to help a youth (age 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health crisis.

One in five youth will experience a mental health challenge at some point, and YMHFA teaches a 5-step action plan where anyone can learn how to provide help for youth in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include depression and mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, substance use, and more. YMHFA teaches about recovery and resiliency.

The Children's Cabinet is pleased to be able to offer this program at no cost on a virtual platform to anyone throughout the year.

Ways to Give: Host a Facebook
Fundraiser

Did you know you can host a fundraiser on Facebook? You can easily launch a fundraiser for your favorite nonprofit, like yours truly. Here are the easy steps:

  1. Visit https://www.facebook.com/fundraisers/
  2. Click on the light blue "Raise Money" button on the left.
  3. Select Nonprofit
  4. Search for The Children's Cabinet
  5. On the left, you can edit your details. Most of these can remain unless you would like to change them: how much money you would like to raise, the title, fundraiser end date, and description.
  6. Click the blue button that says "Create." This fundraiser will then show on your Facebook feed!
We are only able to support our community because of the financial gifts we receive.
