We Are Welcoming September

Art of Childhood was a tremendous success! We saw smiling faces, had inspired conversations, and attendees were able to hear from two families in our free family counseling program who were generous enough to share their personal stories. We are so thankful for the outpouring of support we received from this community, thanks to you all we raised $517,315, and $134,400 will go directly to fund our free family counseling program. Thank you!

We highlighted our free family counseling at Art of Childhood which provided an opportunity to talk openly about mental health. This important topic is not always easy to discuss, but the more we talk about it, the easier it becomes, and the associated stigma reduced. While suicide can be the result of an untreated mental health condition, and with September noted as National Suicide Prevention Month, we offer the following ways The Cabinet supports youth and families:

  • Free Family Counseling: Our no-cost services are available to families and youth in need of counseling support. Families meet with their therapist to develop a treatment plan to address concerns and improve family functioning.
  • SOS Program: The Children's Cabinet offers suicide prevention screenings in all Washoe County Middle Schools and upon request from other schools. Through a guided DVD and discussion, students learn how to identify the symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts in themselves or their friends and encourage help-seeking through the use of the ACT technique (Acknowledge, Care, Tell).
  • Safe Place: Safe Place started in 2003 and the mission is to provide Washoe County children/youth with a safety net to deal with a dangerous or threatening situation they are not prepared to deal with on their own.
  • Wraparound Support: Wraparound support is offered to every child and family who contacts the Children's Cabinet. This support involves meeting with a case manager to assess the family and youth's unmet needs. From there, you will work with your case manager to create family-centered goals and determine how much week-to-week support you want to have.
  • Youth Mental Health First AidThe Children's Cabinet offers free online courses for adults looking to support youth. The National Council has provided the curriculum and training and funding was granted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
We are here to support children and families, please contact us if you need assistance, or you need help finding a resource. If you, or anyone you know, is experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or text CARE to 839863.

One final thank you to our amazing supporters - you make our mission possible, to keep children safe and families together.

 Thank you.

September is Hunger Action Month

Our friends at Food Bank of Northern Nevada are bringing attention to an important topic: Hunger Action Month. They are raising awareness not only of the issue of food insecurity  but of the incredible impact our community can have when we take action together.

The Hunger Action Month campaign is all about how small acts come together to make a big difference, and there are three primary ways people can take action for the Food Bank: volunteer, donate, and advocate. Read more here

An easy way to help? Go ORANGE on September 17 for Hunger Action Day! Orange is the color of Hunger Action and by wearing that color, you are bringing attention to this important topic. Help them spread awareness by wearing orange and challenging your friends and family to do the same. Snap a selfie and share on social media!

Thank you, Two Chicks!

Two Chicks Reno chose The Children's Cabinet as the July nonprofit for Champagne Campaign!

After the campaign, they presented a check to The Children's Cabinet for $1,816.40, which will go directly to our Redfield Academy. What is the Redfield Academy? The Redfield Academy is available for Washoe County students at risk of dropping out of high school. These students have the opportunity to recover credits and work toward graduation. Our students can choose to return to a traditional school setting or graduate, with a traditional diploma, from Redfield Academy.

Thank you, Two Chicks!
