                                                  CEO's  Message

Gratitude. It is a simple word that means so much. And when you hear it expressed by the children we serve, it takes your breath away.

These children who are victims of abuse and neglect, who have lost so much at such a young age, are so appreciative of the love and support they get at Children’s Harbor. When given a gift card to decorate her room, one of our 9 year olds bought a picture of a lighthouse because it reminded her of how much she loves Children’s Harbor.

I am grateful for an incredible staff, an amazing board, and a caring community who give so much of themselves, to bring hope and a better future to the children who call Children’s Harbor “home." Have a very happy Thanksgiving.

Winterfest Boat Parade Annual Dinner at
The Chart House

“People look forward to this event every year,” said Children’s Harbor board member and former Board Chair Marty Alexander of Holland and Knight. Organized by Children’s Harbor Founder, Bill Mahoney of Mahoney and Associates and Karla Nickell, it has become an annual ritual at the Chart House, where guests enjoy a gourmet meal on the dock while watching the Winterfest Boat Parade.

We are so grateful to our 2016 Winterfest sponsors and guests for helping us to fill the Chart House.  Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, KEMET Electronics; Our Harbor of Hope Sponsors, Comerica and Citrix, Our Beacon of Light Sponsors, Century Management, Delta Dental, Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart and Shipley, and Wells Fargo and our Anchor of Safety Sponsors, JM Family and Sunshine Health.

And don't forget to buy raffle tickets to Win a 7-night Caribbean Cruise on a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship of your choice. Tickets are only $25 each of 5 for $100. The drawing  will be held Dec. 10, 2016 at the Winterfest Boat Parade Dinner, Chart House Fort Lauderdale.

Volunteers  bring Girl Scouts to Children's Harbor

In 2015, when Suzzy Sikler first came to Children’s Harbor she wanted to do something special for the Kids  through her Girl Scout troop, so she and other troop leaders planned the first Halloween Trick-or-treat on  campus.  In March they did an Easter Egg Hunt, but Suzzy wanted to do more. She and troop leader Susan Meija came up with the idea of bringing Girl Scouts to Children’s Harbor! So, Children’s Harbor Girls Scouts have their own troop #14001. Once a month, the troop meets on campus, and the 8 girls who have joined so far get to participate in monthly meetings, earn badges and go on outings.

A huge thank you to Troop Leaders Suzzy Sikler and Susan Meija for bringing Girl Scouts to Children's Harbor. We are so proud of them!

Brown's Harbor provides housing for former foster youth

Thanks to Benefactors Ashley and Ed Brown, CEO of the Tequila Patrón Spirits Company, their nonprofit, Selfless Love Foundation is collaborating with Children’s Harbor to provide housing for former foster youth, ages 18 – 23 on the Howard C. Forman Campus in Pembroke Pines. With the support of the Brown’s, the City of Pembroke Pines and ChildNet, Children’s Harbor took over the program operations on September 1st. The supportive housing program which includes 20 two bedroom apartments and a community center has now been renamed Brown’s Harbor.

The $1 million gift to Children’s Harbor will give the apartments a major facelift, redesign the Business Center and provide a wide range of services to help guide these youth toward true independence

“We have big dreams,” says Ashley Brown, President of Selfless Love Foundation, the sponsoring organization. “Not only for Brown’s Harbor, but for these wonderful young people. Our plans are to improve this existing program by creating a supportive sense of community, providing life skills workshops, and renovating the apartments to feel like more of loving home environment.”

This year, please help us with gift cards for the holidays. A gift card will give our children the pleasure of shopping for themselves, going to the movies or saving for something they really want.  Your gift will put a smile on their faces. Gift cards are accepted for any amount, to any store, as few or as many as you can spare. Or if you would like to donate to the holiday fund, please click here and put #SMILES Fund in the comments section.
