Hello families,

Stories and storytelling are powerful tools for passing on wisdom, values, and history that help inform our paths forward in life. They set our minds free to wonder about the characters within them, to be curious about the things we might have in common or not, and to practice empathy by entering into the story with them.

During Black History Month in Children's Church, we will hear stories about the accomplishments of 4 people of African descent from all over the world and throughout history. This week, we will follow along with the adults in learning about Absalom Jones, then Harriet Tubman, Arthur Wharton (born in Ghana -outstanding athlete in many different sports, becoming the first Black man to play professional soccer in 1889) , and Leymah Gbowee (a remarkable woman who used her voice to bring a peaceful end to a civil war in Liberia). You can look up their stories with your child and wonder about what it must have been like for that person, in that time, in that culture to have done what they did. What values or traits kept them going? What can we learn from them and how will "meeting" them change you going forward?

Don't forget :

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper(5:00-7:00)

and an All Ages Service (6:00-6:30) where we will sing, pray, burn our palms from last year (bring yours!) and bury our Alleluias for the season of Lent. Pancakes will be served before and after the service by the Youth going on Pilgrimage this summer. The cost of dinner (and any donations) will go towards defraying the cost of the trip.

For kids and the lessons they teach me each week. Me, as I am watching a child dance to the music during the musical: " You like to dance to the songs." Child: "I can't help it. When we sing church songs, I guess the Holy Spirit gets activated in me."

Philadephia 11 Documentary Viewing and Light Lunch

Feb. 11th, after the 11:15 service

In what is now unremarkable to most, All Saints’ parish has been served by over a dozen ordained female priests. But it was only fifty years ago that eleven courageous women arranged their own ordination in Philadelphia before the General Convention settled the controversial issue three years later. Their ordination divided churches and provoked national outrage against the women who dared to defy the Church’s and Christianity’s patriarchy.

All parishioners, men and women, are invited to come after the 11:15 service on the 11th for a light lunch and screening of the documentary about this historic event. The Revs. Jenny McBride, Naomi Tutu, and Karen Evans will lead a discussion. Not available to the general public, the film invites us to question historical hierarchies and the meaning of radical inclusivity and to reflect on why it is important for our walk of faith to have female priests.

All Ages Ash Wednesday Service

Feb. 14, 5:00-5:30 in the church

(adapted from Worshippingwithchildren.blogspot.2013)

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday.  It is one of the services of the church year children are least likely to attend.  That is unfortunate because there are three big reasons for them to be there.

** When children see all the adults they love and respect wearing ashes and they themselves are marked with ashes, they know they belong.  They are one of God’s people.  Other days they may know that with their minds, but on Ash Wednesday they know it in a powerful way with their eyes.

** Because we are all marked not with golden markers but with messy black ashes, children learn that all of us mess up and are forgiven.  The most loved and respected adult they know does and they do.  In a world where they are constantly told they can do better and can make good choices and should be special, this is important life-shaping information.

** This year, we will all mark each other with the ashes. Just as children get to give communion to each other and adults on Wednesday nights, marking each other gives them and us a powerful reminder that children are full members of the body of Christ, that they can step into their priesthood in this community and in the world, and that they have a direct relationship with God that is their own.

I hope you will join us from 5-5:30 in the church.

Sandwich Make for Habitat Volunteers

Plant Seeds of Hope

February 24, 10-11am

We need Volunteers. Won't you come? Bring a friend or neighbor.

Join us to make sandwiches for volunteers working on our Habitat House on Saturday, Feb. 24th from 10-11am. The kids want to be a part of this outreach ministry, but unfortunately, they are too young. What we can do is plant some flowers in containers to deliver at the Giving Over Ceremony and we can make food for those working on the house. We will meet in Ellis Hall to put together about 50 sandwiches and and plant our seeds in containers. I will take the sandwiches over to the house (anyone else is welcome to follow me over to help serve them!). We will keep the plants on our window sill until time to deliver them. We will make turkey and ham sandwiches, I will provide the chips and cookies. Please sign up to bring one of the ingredients and join us for some good old fashioned service ministry time. And if you have any old potting soil or pots, let me know.

"God use our hands and feet to serve others".
