pics from Epiphany service

Hello Families!

Epiphany is not only a day, it is a season that lasts until Lent. Here are four themes that come up during the season:

God’s Inclusion of All People

"The political significance of gentile wise men honoring a Jewish child offers a powerful starting point for exploring topics like God’s inclusion of all people into life with the God of Israel, crossing social and political boundaries and borders, and racial justice."

Baptismal Covenant

"The first Sunday after Epiphany is the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, which is a day for baptizing new members and reaffirming the baptismal vows of the whole community. This occasion for baptism makes the weeks following Epiphany a good time to dive into our community’s baptismal covenant, promises, or vows. Exploring what baptism means for the life of the body of Christ can be a fruitful way to support newly baptized members and to reexamine the core of Christian faith and life together as a community."

Illuminations and Revelations

"Epiphany’s etymological ties to actions of appearing, revealing, and making known also provide fertile ground for exploring revelations and gaining understanding during the season. This time offers an opportunity to learn more about God, your community, and the world."

Callings and Discernment

"Often in the season after Epiphany, the Sunday lectionary gospel readings include stories of Jesus calling people to be disciples at the outset of his ministry. These call stories open the door to exploring and discerning both personal and communal vocations during this season."

These ideas come from a Building Faith article originally published in 2022. You can read it Here for more resources.

I thought the last idea was particularly timely as we will begin gathering over the next few months to discern what we want to do on this block. You will be invited to come to the Future of the Block forums beginning Jan. 21st. to talk and wonder, listen and dream, pray and prepare for how God might use this community and our physical space here in Midtown to God's glory. Mark your calendars and look out for the dates in the enews.

If you have not signed up yet to help with Children's Church, please see the link below. We have to have enough adults to meet our Safeguarding God's Children protocols or we simply can not meet. It is a delightful way to minister to our children and no prep needed - just bring your wonderful self. We must fill out the calendar asap. Thanks!

Thanksgivings

For Kate Mabry and her leadership in our Baptism Banner group. She needs more folks to volunteer to put together a banner or two during the year, so please reach out to me or her if you are interested. If you have an older child, it might be something that you could do together.

Sounds of Freedom:

Celebrating the Legacy of the

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

2:30pm Jan. 14, the Church

Sounds of Freedom: Celebrating the Legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., exploring music’s power to unite, empower, and transform a community. Our host will be the Rev. Natosha Reid Rice. Musicians include Andy Barnett on the piano, saxophonist Will Cleary, and vocalist Imani-Grace Cooper (Theodicy Jazz Collective), Robert Boone Jr. (drums, Count Basie Big Band), Mike Beshara (bass, Bonaventure Quartet), and guest musician Dr. Tony McNeil, professor of Worship at Columbia Seminary. The concert will be a chance for us to experience Civil Rights movement freedom songs communally, as they were originally intended, and jazz improvisation as social commentary, drawing on the sacred tradition established by artists such as John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Mahalia Jackson. Please come and celebrate with us!

Help Threads by Connecting us with Local Schools!

Could you help Threads expand its clothing donations program by connecting us with your child’s school? Threads needs (and would greatly appreciate!) liaisons with area schools to coordinate clothing donations.

School Liaisons will:

  • Coordinate with your child’s school to occasionally  include information about Threads in its parent newsletter. Threads will provide the copy!
  • Provide donation bin or box at your child’s school to collect clothing donations. Threads has a logo for the bin!
  • Monitor the bin and bring the donations to Threads when it’s full.

Please contact Marcia at threads@allsaintsatlanta.org to volunteer and for more information. Thanks!

The Baptism Banner Committee is looking for new volunteers to make banners that are presented to children on the day of their baptism at All Saints'. If you enjoy crafting and giving gifts to others, your enthusiasm for our mission is what we seek most! The tasks are cutting felt shapes, letters and numbers, gluing and ironing them on a felt shield, and sewing a single bell with a few simple stitches at the bottom of the banner. The time commitment is flexible. Ideally, with enough team members on our committee, each of our volunteers would commit to making 2-3 banners per year. Each banner takes around 4 hours to make. Please contact Kate Mabry involved.
