Happy All Saints' Day!

Today is the actual feast day for All Saints and I love reading about the lives of the Saints of our faith. They are like soap operas and horror stories combined with stories of faithful and selfless love for our Lord. They seem impossible at first glance, but as I read about more modern saints, there is more context for me and I see these people, I know these people, these children of God. Mother Theresa, Oscar Romero, Absalom Jones, and more.

I wonder what it would be like if we spent more time reading about our faith-fathers and faith-mothers instead of listening to some of the folks we hear about in the news. Would we be more hopeful? Would we be inspired to take bold and courageous actions in our life to spread the love of Christ? Would we find more patience and peace knowing that God’s way is THE way and that all we need will be provided? I wonder who are the saints with a little “s” in your family’s life?

Talking to kids about saints and important people in the history of our faith and our families begins to make their faith real. They can see that others before them have walked in faith, cried in doubt, laughed in gratitude, and grown strong in their relationship with God through it all. They can see the ordinary person being filled with strength and conviction by the Holy Spirit working in and through them. They can see the big and small acts of courage done to walk in the way of love. They can start to see "the saint" in more people they encounter.

So check out some of these wacky Saints for a costume idea for Sunday or read about more modern saints that don’t have the big “S”! And check out the article from Grow Christians.

See you under the arcade at 8:45 a.m. for the Procession of Saints.

P.S. Don't forget to "fall back" for Daylight Saving Time on Sunday morning!!

All Saints' Sunday Procession
Dress Up as Saints, Superheroes and Supersheroes

Sunday, November 7
Meet at 8:45 a.m. under the arcade

All Saints' Day is going to be a real party celebrating the heroes of our faith and our church's namesake. All kids are encouraged to find out about a saint from our faith and dress up as them for All Saints' Sunday. I will be Saint Kateri Tekakwitha – look her up!

We will meet under the arcade at 8:45 a.m. (before the 9:00 a.m. service), process in with the priests, and then go to Children's Church. Even if you don't dress up, come carry a saint's banner for us. If a couple of parents could walk with us, that would be great!

Note: The photo above is from 2019. We will be masked!
Children's Church

Sundays at 9:00 a.m. on the 2nd Floor of Pritchett Children's Center

Now that the weather has turned windy and cold, we will gather in our usual spot in Kenan Commons at 8:45 a.m., then process into the Children's Chapel at 9:00 a.m. for our service.

We join the parents in "big" church during the Peace and Announcements, unless we have Children's Church with Holy Eucharist. The next Children's Church with Holy Eucharist will be on November 21 with Andy Barnett presiding.

Parents are welcome to attend anytime with your kids! If you attend the "big" church service, then please stand at the Peace/ Announcements until your children find you.

We invite one or two adult volunteers each week to help! Safeguarding God’s Children requires at least two adults with children at all times. Here is a Sign-Up Genius to sign up to help each Sunday >>
K-5th Grade Formation

K-1st grade meets in The Hollow, 2nd-3rd meets in The Bird’s Nest, and Club 45 meets in The Clubhouse on the 2nd floor of Pritchett.

Dress warmly in layers as you may take an adventure outdoors at any time! We will be masked and distanced and will not be able to have snacks during class indoors. Please have your children finish their doughnut if they get one before coming inside for class. Remember, Club 45 will get a doughnut at the end of class each week.

Children will be spaced as close to three feet apart as possible and masked. Help us by reminding your kids to keep their distance and keep their masks on.

Here are a few things that help make formation run smoothly for teachers:

  1. Know that your children will get a snack at the end of class and there are some traditions embedded here. Club 45 gets glazed doughnuts (so please tell your child NOT to get one before class). K-1st and 2nd-3rd will begin getting their favorite popcorn again (up to you about a donut before class, but they should finish it before coming to class). There will be water available in the courtyard and on the playground.
  2. Have your child go to the bathroom before joining class. Since bathrooms are a good bit away from their site, an adult has to go with the K-3rd graders.
  3. Please walk your child to their site for the next couple of weeks, so that we make sure they get to the right spot. A few were wondering around last week. By the end of October, only K-1st will need to be walked directly to tent and signed in by parents. The rest of the children can be watched from courtyard as they go to their site by then.
  4. Pick-up happens promptly at 11:05 a.m. as teachers need to clean up and leave. K-1st and 2nd-3rd parents should pick up kids from the site. Teachers may have something to share with you about the class and we want to make sure all kids have gotten back to their parents. Club 45 may meet parents in the courtyard.
