Feast of the Trumpets: Remembering and Celebrating God's Faithfulness

Feast of Trumpets
This feast is the first of the fall feasts. The Jewish people call this feast Rosh Hashanah, which literally means "head of the year," as it's observed as the start of the civil year on the Jewish calendar (in contrast with the religious year, which starts with Passover). In the Old Testament, this celebration focused on the faithfulness of God. It consisted of a time of rest, "an offering made by fire," and
the blowing of the trumpets. The Feast of Trumpets would occur at the new moon when only the slightest crescent would be visible. Watchfulness was a critical ingredient of the feast. This need for watchfulness and preparedness with the Feast of Trumpets is echoed throughout the New Testament in connection with the Lord's second coming.

Old Testament Significance
Several times a year the Israelites gathered together for a festival. In Leviticus 23, the Lord said to Moses, "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'These are my appointed feasts ... which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.'" These seven festivals are Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Festival of First Fruits, Feast of Harvest, Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths). In addition, the Israelites celebrated the Festival of Jubilee on the 50th year, the year following seven cycles of seven Sabbatical years. They also gathered weekly to celebrate the Sabbath. During these celebrations, the
Israelites took time to remember what God had done for His people and to celebrate His goodness. The entire faith community gathered without the burden of work to simply worship and celebrate. They ate, danced, sang, played instruments, prayed, and offered sacrifices to God.

New Testament Significance
The Feast of Passover was fulfilled by the death of the Messiah, the Feast of Unleavened Bread was fulfilled by His sinless sacrifice, and the Feast of First Fruits was fulfilled by His resurrection. The Feast of Harvest began with a great harvest of three thousand souls by the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, who continues to harvest souls today. The Feast of Trumpets will announce Christ's return, the Day of Atonement will usher in His judgment of the nations, the Feast of Tabernacles will begin the journey to our new home in a new heaven and earth, and the Feast of Jubilee symbolizes our eternity in heaven with our Lord and Savior-living in perfection, free from the debt of sin.

Infant Sunday Morning
Jesus Is KING

Palm Sunday: Triumphal Entry
Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11;
Luke 19:28-38

The triumphal entry took place the Sunday before the crucifixion and shortly after Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. There is little doubt that news of the resurrection of Lazarus preceded Jesus to Jerusalem, adding to the number of people looking to Jesus for leadership. The account of Palm Sunday appears in all four gospels. Both Matthew and Luke link this event to the messianic prophecy in Zechariah 9:9.

Zechariah was among the 50,000 or so Jews who returned in the first wave of Hebrews released from Babylonian captivity in 539 B.C. He wrote about five centuries before the birth of Jesus. In his declaration that the king is coming, Zechariah uses a verb tense that indicates the Messiah was in the process of
coming even as he wrote-five hundred years before Jesus rode into Jerusalem that day. He arrived exactly when God had planned and in "the fullness of the time" (Galatians 4:4 NASB).

Even though Jesus' entry into Jerusalem was foretold by the prophets and pointed to the coming of the Messiah King, the matter in which He came was unexpected by the Jewish people of His day. Just as in the Old Testament with Saul, they were crying for a king, but they wanted to prescribe to God what that king should be like. They wanted a warrior, but the Son of God "made Himself
of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant ... He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross" (Philippians 2:7-8, NKJV). But there will come a day when Jesus will again ride into Jerusalem. On that day He will be clothed in regal splendor, riding on a white horse. He will enter victorious into the city as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation19:11-16). Jesus is King.
