Books We Recommend

Don't forget to check out the booklists on our Recommendations page!

Eunice Recommends:

We Always Had Wings by Jess X. Snow

This timely picture book reminds us that “immigration is as old as birds.” Little Snow is on a plane visiting family in China and feels nervous about the experience. Mama tells her a story about how long ago her ancestors flew freely as birds. She reminds her daughter that people have always roamed the earth, even before there were borders and nations. There is empathy here for those who are culturally and physically split between places without a sense of true belonging. The author invites us to imagine: what if all humans could move about the world as birds do?

Alissa Recommends:

Afia in the Land of Wonders by Mia Araujo

Fans of twisted folk and fairy tales won't want to miss out on Afia in the Land of Wonders. This beautiful story is a twist on Alice in Wonderland that draws heavily on African folklore and mysticism to create a magical fantasy story that is as much a story of adventure and self-discovery as it is a story of sibling bonds. The full color illustrations that appear throughout the story are as stunning as the book's cover art. Perfect for fans of myths, and fairy tale retellings with strong female heroines and villains with complicated backstories.
