Did you know that Children's Specialized Hospital has recreational therapy for our long-term care and inpatient kiddos?
This month we're celebrating our excellent recreational therapists! Our recreational therapists help to rebuild skills, improve mood and strengthen social connections. Recreational Therapy uses a wide range of play, recreation, leisure activity, and community-based interventions to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and leisure needs of infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and young adults.
Meet our Facility Dogs: Gallop & Maui
Gallop works in our Long-Term Care Facility in Mountainside, while Maui
is in our Inpatient Facility in New Brunswick.
Our Facility Dogs significantly impact the physical, mental, social, and emotional health of our patients and staff. Maui and Gallop work closely with our recreational therapists to help reduce anxiety and provide a distraction for our kiddos during their daily therapy sessions.
Activity Connection Community Recreation Programs
The Activity Connection programs at Children’s Specialized Hospital include recreation, sports, and social activities for children and teens with special healthcare needs. The programs provide opportunities to make new friends, participate in physical activities, and enjoy new experiences. All programs are led by Children’s Specialized Hospital therapists, certified program instructors, coaches, and trained volunteers who provide age-appropriate and safe activities in an inclusive and fun environment. Our community recreation programs are available for patients and members of the public.
Recreational Therapy Team February Highlights
Our Mountainside Recreational Therapists hosted a delicious ice cream social and gave out an ice cream treat to staff that asked questions about rec therapy!
Our inpatient team hosted a slime event for our inpatient kiddos and their family. From making slime to sliming staff, it was a night to remember!
Our Inpatient Recreational Therapists + Maui had some fun in our gym with our CEO & President,
Dr. Matt McDonald.
The team invited everyone to make their very own worry stone. A worry stone is a small, smooth stone that is shaped like an oval and has a thumb-shaped indentation. The object of the worry stone is to rub the thumbprint back and forth as a way to calm the mind.
