Hello Dear Readers:
September is the busiest month of the year for the hospitality business in San Francisco; we freeze all summer, waiting for warm weather in the fall, and that's when everyone produces their events. It's also Hispanic Heritage Month so I cater a lot and on the 18th, Chile commemorates its Independence. Yes, it's my busiest time of year.
This year KPIX Channel 5 invited me to speak on how Chileans celebrate "el 18." Little did I know that the 7:20 a.m. studio call would barely give me enough time to set up, and that I'd be going on LIVE. Whew! Walking through the KPIX halls took me back to my television production career when I was awarded an internship at the station. Not much has changed there since the early 80s, and I recalled that the hectic, competitive, and "going through the motions" modus operandi of the industry is why I walked away and decided to move to Chile, in 1986. Two years later, I'd be back in NYC.
I have lots to share with you so I'll jump right in. As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, I was invited by Susan Matthews, Oakland-based painter, to produce two events at the Canessa Gallery where she will have a month-long residency. My events take place on Friday, October 7th and Friday, October 21st. On October 7th, I'll be part of the North Beach First Fridays Art Walk, presenting local poets, and I will read a selection of Chilean poetry. Your's truly will also read original works published while I studied at Mills College. However, the evening's focus is to feature Vivian M. Pisano and introduce her book Living in Two Worlds: A Memoir. On October 21st, I will present Los Cantores de Arica, an ensemble of Aymara traditional music from the Altiplano that includes Northern Chile, Bolivia and Peru.
While you're in North Beach at First Friday be sure to stop by the legendary Live Worms Gallery where my sister, Alexandra Rieloff, will be exhibiting a collection of her photographs titled "San Francisco Through Raindrops and Birds." Her photographs are magnificent. This exhibit also features Ayala Marta Minero presenting her work, "Mixture of Paint, Symbols and Found Items." The show opens on Friday, October 7th at 6:00 p.m. and it continues through Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 9:00 p.m. So don't miss October's First Friday in North Beach. It's going to be extra special as it kicks-off Italian Heritage Month. Andiamo.
CineMás, the 14th annual SF Latino Film Festival runs from October 7th through the 22nd. Chile's submission, "Albertina y los muertos" ("Albertina & the Dead"), is a Mimbre Films presentation. You can watch this film virtually as of October 12. Ticket link

Vivian M. Pisano
Last June I visited Vivian and her husband, Paul Widess, at their Berkeley home, in order to plan a reading of her book Living in Two Worlds: A Memoir. Paul is an artist and he painted the book cover.

"Living in Two Worlds tells a story of love, loss, and reflection. Vivian, born to an American mother and Chilean father, has an idyllic childhood in her father’s country. She has her beloved abuelita (grandmother), always attentive and caring; her siblings and cousins, for mischief and fun; and the fundo, a family ranch that is rich with natural beauty for long summer holidays.
But what of all that her mother gave up in the United States? We find out, as the illness of Vivian’s sister takes mother and children abruptly back to the United States—without Papá. In California, Vivian meets her American Grandmother, whose cooking and temperament are completely opposite to those of Abuelita."

CineMás SF Latino Film Festival presents
Albertina & the Dead / Albertina y Los Muertos
Screens virtually- Starting Oct 12: Ticket Link
"Albertina sells flowers at the cemetery in San Miguel de Azapa, Chile, a small town built over Indigenous tombs. For over half of a century, she has led traditions that seek prosperity for the living while keeping their relationship with the dead on good terms. As the matriarch, her death triggers a series of rites that her family and friends carry out with care. Thus, the community aims to ensure a favorable journey for their “grandmother’s” soul and to preserve the traditions that she maintained."

La Fonda del 18 del Centro Chileno Lautaro
Due to the pending rain, the decision to go ahead with the Independence Day celebration was up in the air (or clouds) until the last minute. However, the Centro Chileno Lautaro, celebrating its 65th anniversary, went ahead with their plans and by everyone's account it was one of the best commemorations ever!
The Asado "18 de septiembre" featured the folk dance ensemble Flor de Copihue, and a live show direct from Chile by Kito Barria. MC and musical entertainer Mauricio Bertín kept the party going even as it poured and the members of the Centro Chileno Lautaro, once again, gave out numerous student scholarships. ¡Viva Chile!

Flower Piano is produced by the SF Botanical Garden and Sunset Piano
I missed most of Flower Piano this year, as it falls on my busiest weekend, but fortunately I made it to the Ensemble SF concert and the Beat Corner. Following are photos and a video I took that will give you an idea of why so many of us consider this the most special event of the year. Founded by poet and musician Mauro ffortissimo, of Argentina, and filmmaker Dean Mermell, this is an event you won't want to miss next year.
