Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 7 No. 2 |January 10, 2025

Notes from the Editor:

2025 - How is it possible that a quarter of a century has passed since we watched the ball drop in Times Square while a sea of people looked on wearing those sequined glasses that announced the arrival of 2000? To be honest, I have no idea what I was doing in 2000, so my challenge to myself this weekend is to try to work my way back to the beginning. 9/11/2001 is easy, but that's one day of so many. How have you spent your quarter of a century?

This Arts Blast offers news of plenty of things to do but there are far more that we can't fit in. Make the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com a frequent stop.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're responsible for promoting an arts-related event, send in details using the format at the end of this email. There's no charge for basic calendar listings but your advertising flyer that includes a link to your website will do more to catch readers' attention. Email for advertising information in Arts Blast and Arts Blast on the Air.
Please support small, local businesses. Arts Blast is one of them, so if you have an event coming up, or something artsy to sell or teach, consider advertising it in Arts Blast and/or Arts Blast on the Air!
Ashley Gang at Treasure Coast History Festival
The region’s history takes center stage Saturday, Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the 8th Annual Treasure Coast History Festival gets under way at the St. Lucie Regional History Center, 414 Seaway Drive, Fort Pierce.
The festival, founded by Indian River Magazine in 2006, is free. Exhibits include antique automobiles, pioneer, history, a Seminole War camp recreation and storytellers. Craft sales and food, including a genuine Summerlin Family Fish Fry and a barbecue food truck and taco food truck, will also be available. The band Uproot Hootenanny and soloist Kyle Kraft will be the featured musical group.
A presentation on “The Real Story of the Ashley Gang’’ will headline the annual event.
The Ashley Gang was a large family of criminals headed by John Ashley that roamed the Treasure Coast bootlegging, robbing banks and and committing other crimes until four of the gang members were killed Nov. 1, 1924, by lawmen during a trap set for them at the Sebastian River bridge. A debate has raged for nearly a century over whether the shootings were justified and whether the corruption of Palm Beach County sheriffs George Baker and son Bob drove the gang deeper into crime.
The Ashley Gang panel will start at 11 a.m. in the speakers’ tent and will feature historian Steve Carr, who has spent nearly five decades researching the Ashley Gang and donated the memorabilia that now comprises the permanent Ashley Gang exhibit at the Elliott Museum in Stuart. Also during the session, Waylon Watson will exhibit John Ashley’s Colt .45 and Jimmy Kicliter will exhibit Hanford Mobley’s pistol. Carr will have an exhibit of Ashley Gang memorabilia that will be displayed at the Indian River Magazine tent at the festival, beginning at 9 a.m.
Also appearing on the panel will be Austin Alderman, great grandson of Ashley Gang member Ray Lynn, and Indian River Magazine Publisher Gregory Enns, author of a three-part series that commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Ashley Gang shootings. Indian River Magazine founded the Treasure Coast History Festival in 2018. The St. Lucie County Historical Society produces the festival.
Historical presentations at the Speakers’ Tent will be made at the following times:
9:30 a.m. — Cowboy Brad Phares talks about early Florida cattlemen
11 a.m. — Indian River Magazine Publisher Gregory Enns hosts a panel on “The Real Story of the Ashley Gang," featuring Ashley historian Steve Carr and descendants of the Ashley Gang. Carr will also present an exhibit of Ashley Gang memorabilia.
12:30 a.m. — Anne Sinnott gives a presentation on pioneer cooking
1:30 p.m. — Steve Hoskins and Terry Howard give a presentation on St. Lucie Village pioneer Hatti Chamberlin.
Storytelling will be held at the History Center’s barn and will feature these storytellers on the following subjects:
• Sam Crutchfield on Florida Fishing
• Billy Johnson on the History of Local Artists
• Terry Shannon and Fred Banks on Metal Detecting
• Julie Lounibus, John and Ron Rohm, Steve Hoskins and Terry Howard on Growing Up in St. Lucie Village
No times are assigned for the storytelling.
The festival is presented by the St. Lucie Historical Society.
Sunset Concerts in the Gallery at the Court House Cultural Center, Stuart, on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Each of the concerts reveals the individuality of each of the amazing artists, presenting a wide range of talent from elementary school age up to professionals of all ages! $5 for non-members, free for members. Open to the public.
Registration required.
The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery will present Florida Highwaymen at the Crossroads, a fascinating look at the some of the lesser-known history and events that shaped the journey of this well-known group of artists. Manifesting their dream with oil paint and gasoline, the artists known today as the Highwaymen, drove themselves with talent and ingenuity – even though the challenging route to artistic prosperity was never guaranteed. Yet at each intersection of doubt, fortune, and consequence, their art continued and flourished.
In this new exhibition featuring more than 50 paintings drawn together from 10 private collections from around the state, Florida Highwaymen at the Crossroads reveals key moments, decisions, and twists of fate that helped put the Highwaymen on the map.
The exhibition is the latest in the A.E. Backus Museum’s annual series celebrating and exploring the national phenomenon that got its start here. Florida Highwaymen at the Crossroads will be on view January 11 through March 2, 2025 at the Backus Museum located at 500 North Indian River Drive in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce. Opening Reception – Friday, January 17, 6:00-8:00 pm with remarks at 6:30; free for current members and $20 for not-yet members.
The Highwaymen are a loose collective of Florida artists who learned landscape painting techniques and began a creative enterprise of selling their bold and rapidly-produced works of art to customers up and down the state’s Atlantic Coast and beyond from the trunks of cars. In 2004, twenty-six of the original artists were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, and in 2016 the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American Culture and History opened with 18 Highwaymen paintings in the national collection.
Join us for Mozart & Mother Goose on January 18th at 2 & 7:30 PM
Be swept away in a musical fantasy with Mozart and Mother Goose. You’ll hear Mozart’s most famous melody in Eine kleine Nachtmusik. The BSO welcomes pianist Sasha Kasman Laude for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 – and we end on a high note with Ravel’s whimsical Mother Goose Suite.
Read all about this concert's program on our new Brevard Symphony Orchestra Blog! From the iconic Eine kleine Nactmusik to Ravel's storybook-inspired Mother Goose Suite.
Former Palm City countertenor Terry Barber returns to Stuart for Terry Barber - All the Favorites - Matinee Concert in the St. Mary's Episcopal Church concert series in the Pittenger Center January 12, at 3 p.m. Joining him is pianist Brandon Glick as well as student instrumentalists and vocalists from the Treasure Coast. On the program: Shenandoah, Danny Boy, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and music by Queen, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bernstein, and more.
Barber, based near Princeton, NJ, said he returns to the Treasure Coast as often as possible to reconnect with friends and perform. "Brandon Glick, director of the St. Mary's concert series, has played piano for several of my touring programs and has invited me to perform for a second time. Brandon's idea was, since I lived in Palm City for several years, that I share with one of my home audiences favorites music from my tour programs. I said I'd also like to coach and include some of the most exceptional up-and-coming talents, so the program will include several trios. My friends locally will recall how this work aligns with Artists for a Cause, the nonprofit I founded which remains active."
April 26 will be his next visit to the area, when he appears at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart with Mercury: Songs & Stories of Queen's Lead Singer.
The Museum additionally organizes and hosts changing exhibitions from artists of regional, national and international acclaim.
The Collective, funded in part by the Florida Department of State- Division of Arts and Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts, was designed to provide online exposure for artists with disabilities from our Artist Registry, helping us meet one of our guiding principles: that all individuals with disabilities who aspire to careers in the arts deserve opportunities to develop, strengthen and monetize their skills. We hope you enjoy viewing the incredible artwork of our artists.
VISIT THE ARTS4ALL COLLECTIVE HERESee some of the extraordinary work of the Collective Artists at this year’s Gasparilla Festival of the Arts on March 1st and 2nd at the Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in Tampa.
Meet our artists…Miami Lighthouse for the Blind
We are proud to continue to grow our partnership with Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Their talented artists have long contributed to our exhibitions across the state, so it's a natural step for them to join our Collective as a Partnering Organization. Miami Lighthouse for the Blind artists often collaborate in tactile multi-media, creatively using glass beads, colored sands, textiles, wood and paints to create dazzling and memorable artwork.
The Florida Young Performers program is designed to identify and offer performance opportunities to talented students throughout the state. Now in its 18th year, this extraordinary performing arts program recognizes accomplished students that have a disability, ages 14-24, in music, dance, and theatre performance. Two emerging artists from each category will be selected by a panel of judges that are professionals in their specific field of performance. All applicants will receive adjudication scores and personal written critiques that can be used to improve and refine their performance skills as they continue to develop.
Winners of each category will be given the opportunity to perform at professional venues and/or virtual performance events that will be determined each year and will receive an Amazon gift card.
For more information on the program and for the online application, follow this linkto the Arts4All Florida Young Performers webpage.
The application deadline is February 3, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
