Music Liturgy next Sunday

On Sunday, December 17, a newly created music liturgy, “God Invites Us,” will be premiered in its entirety during the 10am worship service. Newly designated as Artist in Residence at First Church this fall, Brittany Betts composed the piece in collaboration with Pastor Ian Holland and Director of Music Ministries, Patricia Clark.

According to Clark, Betts’ piece features a traditional chant structure artfully overlaid onto tight, contemporary jazz vocal harmonies.  Although primarily meditative, the work also has powerful, energetic moments and lively, syncopated rhythms.  Using SATB Choir with cantor, a treble vocal trio, and piano and organ accompaniment, the music also invites congregational participation  In addition, the piece allows for solo improvisations by a soprano wind instrument, and on December 17 the wind player will be performing on clarinet and saxophone.

A versatile musician, Betts is a trumpeter, singer, djembe player, composer, arranger, collaborator and worship facilitator based out of Rockport, Massachusetts.  She performs with the Riverside Renaissance Swing Band, the David Whitney Orchestra, Cantemus Chamber Chorus, and the vocal trio, ONE.  Her compositions range from works for choir to jazz combo, Christian worship to singer-songwriter, and handbells to piano-trumpet duos, as well as works for percussion ensemble and vocal trio.  Her recent work, “Shining Light on Water,” had its world premier at the Cantemus Chamber Chorus’ 2023 Spring concerts to rousing success.

Betts, Clark, and the First Church Choir have been presenting a slow roll-out of the piece during the December 3 and 10 worship services by performing some of the music and mostly in unison.  During the December 17 service, however,  “God Invites Us”  will be presented in its entirety for the first time, creating a liturgy of nearly continual music.

Christmas Giving Opportunities 2023

The First Church in Swampscott Missions Ministry has assembled a suite of giving opportunities during Advent and Christmas, as below:

Donate Coats - there is a box in the Narthex for the collection by Peter Cipriano

Gift Cards for My Brothers Table - $20 GC's for CVS, grocery and dollar stores, etc.

Alternative Gifts Market - Julia Wistran and family will be available on December 10/17

Christmas Offering to Shelter Box, see the blurb below; checks can be made out to First Church in Swampscott (or you can look for the Christmas Offering on the VANCO app). Funds will be consolidated, and one check will be sent to the charity in mid-January 2024.

ShelterBoxes help people who have lost everything – not just their home and belongings, but practical tools and equipment that create a framework for everyday life. Since each disaster is different and each affected community is different, they customize their aid to suit the needs of the affected population. They provide necessities like tents, kitchen supplies, water filters and carriers, blankets, mosquito nets, solar lights, saws, tarpaulins, and shovels. Where education systems are affected, they send school supplies.  They are also innovating with other organizations to create transitional shelters to provide families with safe, durable homes.

A recent presentation at the Swampscott Public Library focused on the history of this photograph from 1860, and found recently at Town Hall. It shows 18 Penobscot Native Americans gathered with settler Jonathan Phillips in Swampscott beside a wigwam encampment near what is now Little's Point.

Sunday morning Coffee and Conversation

This group has resumed meeting in the Library on non-Communion Sundays. Each week, a member of the group will lead a discussion of spiritual topics, and how the words and stories of the Bible can inform and influence modern day issues. We begin at 9:10 am. During December, we will meet on 12/10, 12/17, 12/24, and 12/31.

We are back doing the work of the church, from weekly worship to meetings to activities! Come join us!
