Hello, Old Donation!
This week’s Gospel opens in the heat of the day. Jesus is tired. He sits down at a well and does something that would have raised eyebrows in his time. He starts a conversation with a Samaritan woman. Jews and Samaritans carried generations of religious, political, and cultural tension. Most people avoided each other but Jesus does not. He does not wait for history to be sorted out or for everyone to agree. He just says, “Give me a drink.” It is such an ordinary, human encounter. And it tells us something essential about God.
God moves toward the places we avoid. Christ meets us across differences, not after we resolve it. That feels especially tender as we watch violence and heartbreak rise again in the Middle East. The history is long and the pain is real. This story does not pretend otherwise. It simply shows us a Savior willing to sit down in the middle of division and begin with relationship. The Samaritan woman brings her real life and her honest questions, and living water begins to flow anyway.
Beloveds, there is always a place for you at Old Donation, and we’d love to help you get connected this Lenten season! We invite you to join our Wednesday evening formation series (6–8 PM), featuring a simple supper and meaningful conversations about The Nicene Creed, or our Sunday morning formation class at 9:30am about racial reconciliation. For a quiet moment of reflection, please join the Daughters of the King this Saturday, 7 March, at 9am for a special time of peace and practice. Whether you have questions like the Samaritan woman or are simply looking for community, there is plenty of room for you at our table.
