Chloe: The Sanctuary’s Master Nest Builder

Chimpanzee Chloe has turned nest-building into an art form! Each afternoon, caregivers often find her creating elaborate, cozy nests in her habitat, complete with a little bedtime reading material. Chloe loves to include her favorite magazines filled with colorful photos of food and recipes. Sometimes she’ll even leave a magazine open to a page featuring a dish that seems to catch her eye, perhaps a hint about what she’s craving for dinner!

In the wild, chimpanzees naturally build multiple nests each day as they forage for food and move through the forest. Using leaves, bark, and branches, they create sturdy sleeping platforms high in the trees for resting or napping.

Here at the Center for Great Apes, our residents display those same natural instincts by building their nests from fleece blankets, sheets, wood wool, and even fresh browse.

To keep life interesting and enriching, caregivers provide magazines and other reading materials for the apes to enjoy, and they are perfect for lining nests, flipping through pages, or, in Chloe’s case, studying new “recipes” before bedtime. Her creativity and imagination are just another reminder of how intelligent and resourceful chimpanzees truly are!

Thank You!

This year’s Giving Day for Apes was our best one yet... and it’s all because of you! Your incredible generosity, enthusiasm, and compassion helped us raise vital funds for the 70 orangutans and chimpanzees who call the Center home. With your support, we also won over $10,000 in cash prizes from the Power Hours, Golden Tickets, and Leaderboards. An amazing accomplishment that multiplies the impact of every gift!

A special thank-you goes to our Matching Gift donors, whose generosity throughout the day, including during the Power Hours, helped inspire others to give and double their impact. Because of you, our residents can continue to thrive in a sanctuary filled with care, comfort, and love.
