China Chat: Bruce Lee: Sifu, Friend, and Big Brother
Author Doug Palmer, a long-time friend of Bruce Lee and one of his youngest martial arts in empty parking lots and backyards around Seattle. Palmer spends a summer with Lee and his family in Hong Kong and provides a fascinating insight into Lee’s personality, from his silly sense of humor and love of practical jokes to his uncanny ability to learn from different fighting traditions to hone his skills. Palmer’s stories paint a picture of a fun-loving, intense young man who worked hard to excel at his craft.

Doug Palmer grew up in Seattle, where he met and learned gung fu from Bruce Lee. While attending Yale University, he spent a summer with Bruce Lee and his family in Hong Kong. After graduating with a major in Chinese Studies and obtaining a law degree from Harvard Law School, he worked in Tokyo for 4 ½ years. He returned to practice in Seattle for the next few decades and is now enjoying his retirement.
Established in 1980, the mission of the Northwest China Council is to promote a greater understanding of Chinese history, culture, business, and contemporary affairs.
