China Chat: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon
In this Creative Professionals China Chat, Dmae Lo Roberts, Minh Tran, and Willow Zheng will share the story of their creative and cultural journey to collaboration that includes Chinese Opera and brush paintings, on the production of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, the first all AAPI cast musical in Portland.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is based on the book by Grace Lin, and plays at the Newmark Theatre (1111 SW Broadway) April 30 - May 28, 2023. Northwest China Council members are invited to save 20% on ticket prices with the code: NWCC20.

Dmae Lo Roberts is a two-time Peabody award-winning writer and independent media and theatre artist who has written and produced numerous documentaries for NPR and PRI including Crossing East, the first AAPI history series on public radio. She is the author of The Letting Go Trilogies: Stories of a Mixed-Race Family (2016) and editor of Speaking Our Truths (2023) a MediaRites production. As Executive Producer of MediaRites, she has returned to Oregon Children’s Theatre as director, having previously directed The Journal of Ben Uchida in March 2020. “I’m excited to be working on this production because it’s a Chinese folktale musical with an all Asian-American cast set in China”.
Minh Tran is the founding artistic director of Minh Tran & Company, a contemporary dance company based in Portland, Oregon. He is a Vietnamese-American choreographer who studied Chinese Opera since the age of 5 and a dance educator who is known for the synthesis of both Eastern and Western aesthetics. He received his BA Degree from Portland State University and Master's in Fine Arts at the University of Washington. Minh is an Emeritus Professor of Dance at Reed College and is the choreographer of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.
Willow Zheng is a professional artist specializing in Chinese traditional paintings. She did illustrations for the short film “Meimei” produced and directed by Dmae Roberts. She is a painting/language instructor with the NW China Council (1999- Present), the Portland Culture and Art Center (2001-2003), and Jiao Ying Culture and Art School (1999-2001). She holds a BFA in figure painting and an MFA in Chinese painting from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in Xi’an, China. Gallery showings include Portland Art Museum Rental & Sales Gallery (2001- 2009); Cook Gallery, Port Orford, Oregon (1990-present); and Solo Painting Exhibition (January 2001). Awards include Portland Public Art Commission for the painting: “Classical Chinese Garden, Portland, Oregon, No. III"; Best of Show, 4th Annual Gresham Juried Art Exhibit (2002); Best of Show, 19th Annual Beaverton Art Showcase (2001); Best of Show, 18th Annual Beaverton Art Showcase (1999)
