Community Partners Join Forces to Support Chinatown’s Recovery and Revitalization
On August 22, more than 200 volunteers came together for a community cleanup in Chinatown, demonstrating the strong spirit of partnership and commitment to keeping our historic district clean, welcoming, and vibrant.
While the City and County of Honolulu has been heavily involved in recovery efforts following the Hurricane Lala, the City remained a co-sponsor of the Chinatown cleanup. Their continued support reflects the importance of maintaining momentum for Chinatown’s revitalization.
The business community also responded with tremendous support. Hawaiian Electric (HECO) and American Savings Bank each sent more than 40 volunteers to participate in the cleanup. Mechanics Bank generously offered their office for registration. HPD led by Major Henry Roberts also sent a team to support the cleanup. Local community organizations, including the United Chinese Society, Wong Leong Doo and C. Q. Yee Hop Foundation, also organized teams to help with the effort.
Working together, more than 200 volunteers spent the morning cleaning Chinatown streets and public areas. Volunteers removed stickers and unwanted postings from utility poles and street signage, cleaned up the streets, and painted over graffiti—helping to improve the appearance of the neighborhood one block at a time.
Chinatown’s revitalization will require continued partnership and ongoing community involvement. The strong turnout on August 22 sends an encouraging message: there are many people and organizations who care about Chinatown and are willing to roll up their sleeves and help make a difference.
