This quarterly Chino Basin Program Bulletin is your source to learn more about an exciting partnership designed to increase local water supply reliability and regional resiliency.

Introduction

The Chino Basin Program (CBP) is shaping the future of water. CBP is a first-of-its-kind water program that moves beyond traditional water management practices to achieve new levels of water security, flexibility, and affordability.

Advanced Water Purification Facility

A major component of CBP is a new Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) that will be constructed at IEUA’s Regional Water Recycling Plant No. 4 in Rancho Cucamonga. This new facility will use multiple treatment processes, such as membrane filtration, reverse osmosis and disinfection to produce 15,000 acre-feet of water per year. The fully treated water will be stored in the Chino Basin using aquifer replenishing wells, significantly enhancing water sustainability within the region.

Chino Basin Program Industry Event

On July 25, an Industry Networking Event was held at IEUA's Headquarters. This event drew over 150 participants, including representatives from small and minority-owned businesses, along with design and construction support services providers.

Participants gathered to express their interest and commitment to supporting potential Progressive Design Build (PDB) teams for the upcoming CBP projects. Additionally, these projects were detailed to more than 160 attendees during a virtual CBP industry presentation on July 23. Both the in-person networking event and the virtual presentation are integral to meeting the good faith efforts required for the grant and funding processes of these substantial projects.

IEUA Awarded MWD Future Supply Action Funding

Program Grant

$401,500 for the Chino Basin Advanced Water Purification

Demonstration Facility

This funding from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) will support the design and construction of the Advanced Water Purification Demonstration Facility, a significant step forward for CBP.

The demonstration facility will be constructed at IEUA’s RP-4 in Rancho Cucamonga, the same location as the future AWPF. To minimize costs, IEUA will leverage an existing maintenance building to house the demonstration facility, which will operate for up to 10 years. Despite its smaller scale, the demonstration facility is designed to emulate several aspects of the proposed full-scale AWPF, allowing IEUA to optimize the design of the future full-scale facility design, optimize operations, and provide opportunities for public education and partner collaboration.

IEUA Breaks Ground on Exploratory Boring and Monitoring Well Project

On June 7, IEUA held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Exploratory Boring and Monitoring Well Project, marking an important step in enhancing local water storage in the Chino Basin. The event took place in Rancho Cucamonga and was attended by staff, representatives of the Chino Basin Watermaster (CBWM), MWD, State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), and other program partners and supporters. This project aims to increase our understanding of the basin and result in increased capacity to store local water supplies. The ceremony highlighted the collaborative effort and support from various key organizations.
